There is something “very wrong” with how Arsenal football club are being run in terms of investment, according to former Hull City defender Liam Rosenior.
The Gunners are currently sixth in the Premier League as they face a battle for fourth place.
What is wrong with Arsenal? Five things to know…
- Arsenal are owned by Stan Kroenke, who has come under constant criticism from past players and the club’s supporters trust.
- The club haven’t contested for a Premier League title in years, finishing second just once in the previous 13 years.
- Their spending is far behind that of their big-six rivals and could only afford loan deals in January.
- Aaron Ramsey is the latest example of a valuable player being allowed to leave the club on a free transfer.
- Arsenal’s only chance of silverware this season is in the Europa League.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate show’, former defender Liam Rosenior discussed the way Arsenal is run in great detail.
Touching on how a lot of the blame used to be aimed at former club boss Arsene Wenger, Rosenior doesn’t understand why Arsenal aren’t able to financially compete with the rest of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
When asked about his thoughts on why Arsenal reportedly had just £40 million to spend in the January transfer window, Rosenior said: “It says that the club aren’t run for footballing reasons and a lot of things were said when Arsene Wenger was manager, about the way he was managing the budget and the way he was managing the squad and that he was protecting people above him.
“If that’s true, when did they move into the Emirates, 13 years ago?
“They don’t have a stadium to pay like Tottenham do, they don’t have any debt that I have any knowledge of, that they can’t say ‘you know what, if we want to be as ambitious as we say we are, we can go and spend and compete with Chelsea, Manchester United and Machester City.
“Now, Manchester City have a huge budget. But for me, Arsenal are losing huge players all of the time on frees, they’re not thinking in the terms of their long-term strategy, Aaron Ramsey is the latest one who is going to leave at the end of the season without recouping a transfer fee.”

Emery’s frustrations
The January transfer window saw Arsenal bring in just the one player, with Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez arriving on loan until the end of the season with an option to buy.
Emery, who took over from Wenger following the end of his 22-year tenure at Arsenal last year, brought in Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Sokratis and Stephan Lichtsteiner last summer but had to work with a much stricter budget than the likes of City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Rosenior believes that the Arsenal boss is growing frustrated with the lack of investment from the Gunners board.
He said: “For me, there is something very wrong about the way that football club is being run on a business level, which is now affecting it on a footballing level, which I don’t think is very fair on Unai Emery.
“Because I don’t think he went into that football club with all his promises of “I’m going to play this way and I’m going to have this philosophy” and now you can see a frustration with him, in that I don’t think certain promises that had been made are being met at that football club.”
Arsenal next play Huddersfield away this weekend.
