Who should replace Puel at Leicester? Dream, realistic, wildcard, Squawka Suggests

Leicester City have sacked manager Claude Puel after a string of disappointing results – and attention has turned to who his replacement will be.

Saturday’s 4-1 loss at home to Crystal Palace was the nadir of a poor run for the Frenchman, who has left the Foxes – along with his assistant Jacky Bonnevay – with immediate effect.

Why did Leicester sack Claude Puel? Five things to know…

  1. From January 31st to the end of last season, Leicester recorded just three wins from 14 games.
  2. Puel has been accused of playing negative and defensive football at both Southampton and Leicester.
  3. Jamie Vardy and Puel never appeared to be on the same wavelength.
  4. Newport County knocked the Premier League side out of the FA Cup 3rd round.
  5. The loss to Crystal Palace extended their winless run to seven games.

Leicester announced in an official statement on Sunday morning that the club and manager had parted ways.

The statement read: “The club would like to thank Claude for his efforts in leading the team during his 16 months in the role and wish him well in his future career.

“Assistant Manager Jacky Bonnevay also departs with the Club’s best wishes.

“First Team Coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler, supported by the club’s established backroom staff, will assume responsibility for the senior squad while the Club begins the process of appointing a new manager.

“The Board will make no further comment until this process is complete.”

Several interesting names have emerged as potential candidates to take the reins at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester may be lacking a sense of direction at present, but the role will be very difficult for plenty of managers to turn down.

Here we take a look at some of the figures who are in the frame for the Leicester job.

Who will replace Puel?

Dream: Rafael Benitez

Benitez has proven himself to be a manager that knows the Premier League well having had spells at Liverpool, Chelsea and now Newcastle United.

Currently swimming against the tide at Newcastle with a board that seems set on making his life difficult, Benitez may be able to be persuaded to leave the North East.

With his contract expiring at the end of this campaign, Benitez could be worth waiting for as a man able to work under budget constraints.

Realistic: Brendan Rodgers

On his way to winning three consecutive trebles with Celtic, Rodgers is the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Puel.

With a wealth of experience in English football – and a harshly judged stint at Liverpool – before taking over the Glasgow side, many are expecting a Premier League return for Rodgers.

Rodgers has shown his ability to dig his heels in at Celtic and this spirit will be sure to have endeared him to the Foxes board and fans.

Amicable with the press and having impressed tactically in Celtic’s earlier European ties, Rodgers could well be the answer to Leicester’s woes.

Wildcard: David Wagner

A fan favourite at Huddersfield Town, Wagner is a bit of a German miracle worker, having overseen the Terriers’ first promotion to the Premier League.

It was seen as a highly improbable challenge to maintain their spot in the top tier but Wagner managed that too, with style.

However, a difficult start to this season caused him to inform the Huddersfield board of a need to take a break from management.

Although the Leicester move may be somewhat unlikely, it’s a role Wagner has been linked to before and one that could be a good stylistic match-up.

Squawka Suggests: Sean Dyche

Burnley has been a long-term project for Dyche, who has managed to make an incredible impact with the Clarets.

With one of the Premier League’s lowest wage bills, Dyche has his side playing attractive football and has secured promotion to the Premier League twice.

Getting his side to the Europa League and beating a rising Istanbul Basaksehir side was a highlight, along with a seventh-place Premier League finish.

With the players and funding available at Leicester, it would be interesting to see Dyche given an opportunity to take his style of football to the next level.
