‘Crazy’ Marco Reus would have been a great Barcelona player, says Ter Stegen

Marco Reus would have been a ‘great player’ for Barcelona, according to their goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Reus spent 10 years in the Borussia Dortmund youth system before leaving the club in 2006, only to make a return in 2012 after a fruitful spell with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Reus’ crazy Dortmund resurgence? Five key things to know…

  1. Reus joined Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2012.
  2. Initially, the German was a huge success, scoring 76 goals in his first four seasons.
  3. Injury restricted Reus to a combined 28 Bundesliga outings over the past two campaigns.
  4. This term has seen the 29-year-old moved into a new No.10 role, scoring 13 goals in 19 Bundesliga games so far.
  5. Germany teammate, Ter Stegen, believes the forward would have been a ‘great’ player for Barcelona.

Despite having large parts of his career disrupted with injuries, the 29-year-old has still managed to score 113 goals in 231 games for the current Bundesliga leaders.

And Reus’ Germany teammate mate, Ter Stegen, firmly believes the forward could have been a success at Barcelona, saying his ‘crazy style’ would have fitted perfectly in the Catalan region.

“What kind of football does he play? His style is crazy!” the Blaugrana goalkeeper told DAZN (via Goal). “Reus would have been a great player for Barca.

“I guess more would have been possible for him in terms of joining a bigger team, but he is very happy because his family is in Dortmund. That was always very important for him.

“He’s a guy who could play for any really big team, but he’s also a guy – and you have to respect this – who always said: ‘No, I’ll stay where I belong, where my family is, where I have support.

“That’s an awesome decision from an awesome guy.”

Reus has 13 goals and 8 assists in 19 Bundesliga games so far this season, with Dortmund sitting three points clear of Bayern Munich in top spot.

Ter Stegen: Gotze back where he belongs

Ter Stegen continued to discuss Reus’ Dortmund teammate and fellow German, Mario Gotze, who has enjoyed somewhat of a career resurgence this season after recovering from myopathy, a condition which affected the strength of his muscles and recovery time between games.

Gotze has four goals and four assists in 16 Bundesliga games this season and Ter Stegen, 26, is glad to see the former Bayern man “back where he belongs”.

“I’m glad that Mario is back on the right path, that was a huge relief for him,” he said. “Things have gone really well behind the scenes and that’s great for him. It’s amazing to see him back where he belongs.”
