Newcastle’s record-breaking signing is already more ‘creative’ than Naby Keita.
Despite playing 99 minutes, Almiron has served up 7 chances compared to Keita’s six, just one stat that helps emphasis the impact the Paraguayan has made since his £20m move to Newcastle.
Almiron’s good start to Premier League life: Four things to know…
- The Paraguayan has made two appearances for his new club in the league after his £20m January move.
- In those games, Newcastle drew with Wolves and beat Huddersfield.
- The player has already created six chances for his side.
- Almiron has 14 caps for his native Paraguay.
Almiron’s six chances came against Huddersfield; no player has created more in a single game for Newcastle since start of the 2017/18 season. Naby Keita, Liverpool’s £52m man, has managed six in 19 league matches.
However Huddersfield are a club in free fall destined for relegation, and in this particular game, only had 10 men from minute 20.
Tougher tests are to come for the creative player, but his great start in the north east hasn’t gone unnoticed, least of all Alan Shearer, who tweeted after the game: “An impressive home debut from Almiron, but man of the match again @seanlongstaff97 faultless in the middle of the pitch.”

Longstaff turning heads at Newcastle
21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff put in a virtuoso performance for the magpies also, leading to Rafa Benitez to say after the game that he could see his player in the England set-up soon.
“Sean wouldn’t look out of place with England, there are not too many young English players with his quality,” said Benítez, via The Gaurdian.
“I think he will go, he’s doing well and playing in the Premier League. I like to see my players going to the national team. I don’t care if it’s the Under-20s, Under-21s or even the senior side but I think he needs to go one step at a time. If we start talking too much about how well it’s doing, it’s a risk.”
We discussed the promising ability of both Longstaff and Almiron in this week’s Squawka Talker.
