PSG president rules out sporting director role for Wenger

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has confirmed former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will not become the club’s new sporting director.

Wenger has been out of work since leaving the Gunners last summer, ending a 22-year association with the club. But, far from retiring, the Frenchman has been linked with various roles for when he does opt to return to football.

What’s next for Wenger? Five key things to know…

  1. Arsene Wenger left Arsenal in May 2018 after 22 years at the club.
  2. The Frenchman is yet to return to football, though has not officially retired.
  3. As a result, Wenger has been linked with various roles at both managerial and board level.
  4. Recent reports tipped the 69-year-old to become PSG’s next sporting director following a meeting with the club’s president.
  5. But Nasser Al-Khelaifi has denied these links, imploring reporters to let the club get on with their work.

The most recent reports have seen Wenger linked with becoming sporting director of Ligue 1 champions PSG, after meeting the club’s president last week.

However, Al-Khelaifi has since refuted the speculation, insisting the club are happy with current sporting director Antero Henrique.

“I have very good relations with Arsene,” he told Le Parisien, as reported by the Mirror.

“I’m close to him and I’ve known him for a long time. He is a wonderful manager and coach. He has a very sharp and very complete knowledge of football.

“But we have a sports director, Antero Henrique, in whom I have great confidence.

“I hear the media constantly say that Arsene will come to take this job. It’s too much. Let us work, please.

“Antero does a very good job. He will continue with us. He stays there.”

Paris Saint-Germain currently look on course to retain the Ligue 1 title, sitting 17 points clear at the top of the table with one game in hand on second-placed Lille.

The French champions are also in with a good chance of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, leading Manchester United 2-0 after the first leg.

Wenger still looking for right role

Aside from the sporting director role at PSG, Wenger has also previously been linked with managerial roles at AC Milan, Fulham and even Chelsea in recent days.

But Wenger himself has always kept relatively quiet over his future, recently admitting his next step is still unknown.

“My future is unknown, even to me,” he said at the launch of the Sport for Good awards.

“I’m quite open you know, I enjoy daily life know and I have travelled a lot recently.

“I believe as well that sport today, in the world, has a huge responsibility. It’s not only about stars, it’s about values.”
