Willian addresses Chelsea fans who didn’t like his post-Carabao Cup Pep talk

Willian has addressed the Chelsea fans who were angered by his cordial exchange with Pep Guardiola following the club’s Carabao Cup final defeat, saying it was due to politeness towards the Man City boss.

During the post-match celebrations at Wembley the Brazilian winger was captured laughing with Guardiola and was immediately slammed by some sections of the Chelsea fanbase.

Why was Willian laughing with Guardiola? Four key things to know…

  1. Chelsea lost on penalties against Man City in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
  2. After the match, cameras caught Willian and Guardiola sharing a cheerful conversation and a friendly embrace.
  3. Naturally, this did not go down well with some Chelsea fans, who subsequently slated the Brazilian’s actions.
  4. However, Willian has now taken to social media to explain the situation.

Willian started the match at Wembley, but was taken off shortly after regulation time for January signing Gonzalo Higuain following a tame 95 minutes on the pitch, in which he failed to register a single shot.

His lukewarm performance garnered even more attention after his post-match exploits with Guardiola, but Willian has since hit back, insisting it was instinctive to show courtesy towards the Spaniard as it would be to anyone who shows him affection.

On his Instagram he wrote: “I’m very sad because we didn’t win the EFL Cup title, which was our main objective today, but we gave 100% until the end and we left with our heads up.

“Let’s keep working, because there are more goals until the end of the season.”

However, his admission of sorrow was not met by sympathy, with one user responding by suggesting the 30-year-old did not look saddened during his conversation with the City boss, but Willian was having none of it.

Willian added: “I just tried to be polite with him, as I try to be with all who talk to me.”

Match marred by Kepa controversy

The match failed to live up to the expectation of the exhilarating encounter two weeks prior at the Etihad – in which City ran out 6-0 winners – but it was not a cup final immune from major controversy.

In extra-time goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga appeared to refuse to bow to his manager’s decision to be substituted off and he defiantly stayed on the pitch, much to the disdain of Maurizio Sarri.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Sarri said: “It was a misunderstanding, I heard there was a problem and we needed to change it. I realised the situation only when the doctor arrived on the bench after some minutes.

“It was a misunderstanding, I understood the goalkeeper had cramp and would be unable to go to the penalties.”

However, although the incident was initially played down by both parties, the club has subsequently announced that Kepa will be fined one week’s wages for his actions.
