Manchester United midfielder Fred isn’t completely trusted by caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
In the first half of United’s Premier League match at home to Liverpool, the Red Devils were forced into a substitution following an injury to Ander Herrera, with Solskjaer opting to field Andreas Pereira instead of Fred.
A tough season for Fred: Five things you need to know…
- Manchester United signed Fred last summer from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk for £50 million.
- The 25-year-old made his debut for the club on the opening day of the season in United’s 2-1 home win against Leicester City.
- However, since then he has struggled to establish himself in the starting line-up, starting just seven Premier League games.
- He has made just 15 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring just one goal.
- Fred has been compared to previous South Americans who have struggled at Old Trafford.
With Herrera forced off the pitch with injury, Solskjaer decided that he didn’t want Fred to step into the Spaniard’s place, choosing instead to bring on Pereira.
Speaking during his commentary duties on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “I think that shows what the manager thinks of Fred.”
“He’ll get chances”
Speaking prior to this afternoon’s clash between the two arch-rivals, caretaker boss Solskjaer stressed that Fred would get opportunities to flourish at Manchester United, despite his struggle for form at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer told the Manchester Evening News: “We know there’s a very, very good player there with Fred, so hopefully he’ll adjust to the English game because there’s no doubt there’s talent, absolutely no doubt.

“There’s loads of players that have come in and found the first few months difficult.
“One of the best players I’ve played with that struggled the most was Diego Forlan. Veron is another, you know. They were two fantastic players and it took a bit of time.
“But when they settled they performed. So I don’t think he needs to worry too much. He’ll get chances.”
Fred has started seven Premier League games and played 566 minutes for Manchester United this season.

Twitter fan reaction – “Why did we buy Fred?”
United fans are understandably confused by the lack of game time Fred has been offered so far this season. Bought for a costly £50 million, Fred has played just 566 minutes of football this season and is languishing well down the pecking order.
So united really bought another fraud in fred??

What’s the purpose of United buying fred ?!

Says everything about Fred that Andreas came on before him. At this rate, will be shocked if he's at United past the summer.

Serious question: What on earth is happening with Fred? How can he be the 6th choice midfielder for United.
