Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that he is still learning from the club’s disappointing defeat against Manchester United last year.
Jurgen Klopp’s men lost out 2-1 at Old Trafford last season with two goals from England forward Marcus Rashford securing the victory for the Red Devils.
How important is TAA? Five things you need to know…
- Trent Alexander-Arnold made his debut for Liverpool in 2016 in a 2-1 League Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
- The versatile defender has made 69 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.
- In 2018, the youngster’s form for Liverpool saw him called up to the England squad by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.
- He has five caps and one goal for his country.
- Liverpool are second in the Premier League – level on points with Manchester City – but with a game in hand against Manchester United.
Unfortunately for both Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool, the young defender is ruled out of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United due to injury. However, that hasn’t stopped him from reflecting on his previous trip to Old Trafford.
Speaking to reporters, Alexander-Arnold admits that the result and his performance in particular in the defeat against United in 2018 made him second-guess whether he had the ability to perform at the highest level.
Alexander-Arnold said: “I still use that game as a learning point.
“That is probably the best thing to do; look back on the harder games you’ve had, the tougher games, learn what I didn’t do well and what I could have done better.
“The Manchester United game was definitely one of those games but rather than let it get me down, or put me down and think that maybe I am not good enough at this level, it was important to use it as a positive and see it as a learning step to improve.
“I needed to use it as motivation to make sure something like that doesn’t happen again and to prove that you are better than you showed on that day.”

A big few months for Liverpool
The Reds face United on Sunday with Jurgen Klopp’s side hoping to prove to both themselves and the world that they are more than capable of winning their first Premier League title in 29 years.
Having to watch United dominate England’s top division across 20 years, it would be quite something for the Merseyside club to turn up at Old Trafford and announce themselves as United’s true superiors.
Even with a victory at Old Trafford, Liverpool will know that Manchester City will be hot on their tails, just three points behind Klopp’s side with 11 games to play.
Whether the Reds can hold their nerve and get past a rampant Manchester United side awaits to be seen.
