Manchester United are set for transfer talks over Sporting Lisbon midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, according to reports.
The Portugal international has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in the league for Sporting this season and has been linked with a move to Premier League leaders Liverpool in recent months.
Could Fernandes cut it in the Premier League? Five key things to know…
- Fernandes signed for Sporting from Sampdoria in 2017.
- The midfielder has an impressive 38 goals in 95 games for the club so far.
- Fernandes’s form has seen him pick up 11 senior caps for Portugal to date.
- This season, the 24-year-old has scored 11 league goals and provided a further seven assists.
- Fernandes has been linked with moves to both Man Utd and Liverpool in recent weeks.
However, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, it is the Red Devils who have made the first move.
Their report claims United have ‘made contact’ with Fernandes’ agent and – with Sporting facing financial difficulties – a large transfer fee may be enough to prise the fan favourite away from Lisbon.
Fernandes himself was pressed on his future recently, although the 24-year-old was quick to dismiss rumours of an exit from Sporting, claiming he is keen to help Sporting achieve their targets this season.
“I’m in a good moment. It’s important to score goals, but what I care about is helping the team,” he told JN.
“I have returned and now I want to win even more titles, I know the size of Sporting and I am not satisfied with just two League Cups.”
Sporting are currently fourth in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
Solskjaer needs just three signings to be a success, says Gullit
Whether or not Fernandes is in the sights of Man Utd remains to be seen. A more pressing issue, however, is the future of caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian has overseen a remarkable transformation in form since taking the reins at Old Trafford, losing just once in 14 games so far.
It is still unclear whether he will be in charge come the start of next season, but former Newcastle and Chelsea boss Gullit believes he deserves the job and is just a trio of signings away from success.
Gullit told Match of the Day 2: “I want to say something to the board also, you tried with three coaches already from outside of Man United and they all failed.
“You have somebody now from inside of Man United and he’s an instant success. You have all the players and the old players on TV backing him up.
“This is just the right way to do it. Give him the job. He’s part of Man United. I don’t get it, you tried already with three outsiders and it didn’t work at all.

“I know it’s difficult after Fergie, I know, but now you have somebody who everybody loves, everybody trusts him, he knows the club.
“All the players, everybody’s happy about that. Therefore give him the job and give him the players that he needs.
“He’s going to do well, he already has with these players and I think maybe he needs three others and I think he will do well.”
