“I told you” – Moussa Dembele redeemed as Brendan Rodgers leaves Celtic for Leicester

Former Celtic forward Moussa Dembele has had his say on Brendan Rodgers leaving the club to become new manager of Leicester City.

Rodgers was announced as Leicester’s new manager on Tuesday evening just hours after Celtic confirmed the club had allowed the Northern Irishman talk to the Foxes.

What went down between Dembele and Rodgers? Five key things to know…

  1. Moussa Dembele left Celtic last summer but was criticised by Rodgers and the fans on the manner of his departure.
  2. At the time of his transfer, Dembele tweeted a warning to Celtic fans about the leaders of their club.
  3. Rodgers left Celtic on Tuesday with the club midway through a title race to take up the vacant Leicester City job.
  4. And Dembele, now at Lyon, wasted no time in tweeting his thoughts on the situation.
  5. The Frenchman told Celtic fans that he had warned them and seemed to take enjoyment out of the news.

Dembele left Celtic last summer, joining Lyon after a falling out with Rodgers having initially rejected a bid from the French club despite reportedly promising the Frenchman he could leave.

At the time, Dembele sent cryptic tweets believed to be aimed at Rodgers, with messages including: “A man, without his word, is nothing. A real man keeps his word.”

This was followed by a message to Celtic’s fans, warning them to beware who they call their leaders.

After Dembele’s move to Lyon was confirmed, Rodgers criticised the Frenchman, giving his version of the events.

“The whole episode was disappointing – and I’ll say a bit on it and then that will be it then, because it’s been a bit one-way,” Rodgers said in September.

“I had a really close relationship with Moussa. I enticed him to come here, with a plan going forward. He was desperate for the move, of course, but we wanted to try and keep him because we didn’t have another option.

“But then there was a line that was overstepped, from a behaviour perspective, and I’ve been in these situations enough times to know if you can pull it back or not.”

“And if you don’t know, now you know”

Things looked to have cooled down, until Rodgers was named Leicester’s new manager, leaving Celtic after almost three years, in which he won seven trophies and had the team on course to winning another two this season.

With many Celtic fans already hurting at their manager wanting to leave midway through a title challenge, former forward Dembele wasted little time in having his say.

It started with a simple “Interesting”, when linked a tweet announcing Rodgers’ new job, which was followed up by a gif of a surprised expression.

But the biggest part came with Dembele telling Celtic: “And if you don’t know, now you know. I told you.” The Frenchman accompanied this with a video of Muhammad Ali saying those same words after being George Foreman.

Celtic fans apologise to Dembele

Following his departure from Celtic in September, Dembele was subject to criticism from the club’s fans for the way in which he left. But, after the forward gave his reaction to Rodgers leaving, Celtic fans were quick to apologise, admitted he was right all along.
