Kevin De Bruyne: Any Man City players not enjoying the title race pressure should leave

Kevin De Bruyne has warned his teammates at Man City that if they are not comfortable with title pressure, they should find another club.

The comments came after City beat West Ham 1-0 on Wednesday night, while Liverpool thumped Watford 5-0 to maintain a one-point gap over the Manchester club.

De Bruyne back to his best? Five things to know…

  1. Last season, De Bruyne notched 12 goals and 21 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions.
  2. The Belgian sustained a knee injury that ruled him out for six weeks in November and has only been back playing since December.
  3. Proceeding this, however, was another ligament injury sustained in August which kept him out for two months.
  4. The result has been a mixed season that’s yet to sparkle like last year, with the attacking midfielder picking up just four goals and four assists in 22 games in all competitions.
  5. However, he has now started all of the club’s last seven games, though he hasn’t picked up an assist or goal.

Speaking about the gruelling nature of the title run in, De Bruyne said: “We just need to look at ourselves.

“The schedule is so tough. We are there in every competition and playing well and winning so we just need to keep going.

“If you come here and don’t enjoy the pressure it’s better to leave!”

The Belgian then admitted that the scoreline, which in the end was a tight 1-0, was not important as long as the club secured maximum points.

“The performance was good. I know people expect us to win every game 5-0 but we don’t care,” De Bruyne added.

“The most important thing is creating chances. Some ricocheted away, with the others the last pass wasn’t there, it happens but we won and that was important.

“We played two and half days ago, a hard game at Wembley, and we won again tonight.

“In the first five minutes, it could have been 3-0. We defended well but we just didn’t score.”

Guardiola on the title run-in

Man City’s manager has never put an unnecessary amount of pressure on his side to catch Liverpool, as he has readily admitted he expects both sides to drop points before the end of the season comes.

He made similar sounds after the West Ham game, saying: “We know with 10 games (to go), three points (a win), many things are going to happen.

“I think we are going to drop points, I think Liverpool are going to drop points. So we are going to see, until the end.

“It is important now to refresh and (have a) good recovery and prepare for the game against Bournemouth.”
