Casilla: Leeds promotion would mean more than Champions League triumph

Leeds’ ‘keeper Kiko Casilla believes promotion with Leeds would mean more to him than any of his Champions League medals.

The Spaniard was understudy to Keylor Navas at Real Madrid as the capital club won back-to-back Champions Leagues between 2016 and 2018.

Championship more important than the Champions League? Four things to know about Casilla…

  1. The 32-year-old Spaniard began his career at Real Madrid before moving to Espanyol, taking in loan moves to Cadiz and Cartagena.
  2. He returned to Real in 2015, making 43 appearances for the first-team in total (25 in the La Liga) before joining Leeds on a free transfer in 2019.
  3. Casilla has a La Liga winner’s medal as well as three Champions League trophies.
  4. However, his role in each European win was negligible, making two appearances in each Champions League run.

Leeds have conceded 10 goals with Casilla between the sticks, though he is yet to keep a clean sheet in 6 appearances.

The player was speaking about the prospect of winning promotion to the Premier League in Leeds’ matchday programme ahead of the Yorkshire club’s 2-1 win over Bolton on Saturday; Leeds are third with the possibility to go top with a win over 18th-placed QPR on Wednesday.

“It would mean more than winning the Champions League,” Casilla said. “It’s the objective we have and this is why I am here.

“I want to help the team and help Leeds get back where they belong. To get this achievement for the centenary year of the club would be the perfect moment for me to go to the Premier League.”

The promotion race hots up

With 12 league games to go, the race for the two automatic promotion spots is hotting up.

Norwich have traded pole position with Leeds for the past few months, with Sheffield United also in hot pursuit of top spot.

Now just two points separate Norwich from Leeds, though with a game in hand, Leeds could be top of the table come Tuesday night.

Leeds and Sheffield United play each other on March 16, in a match that could go some way in deciding the complexion of the top two.

But with 12 games to, all three have a credible chance of topping the Championship, while the likes of West Brom (60 points) and Middlesborough (57 points) aren’t out of the equation yet either.
