Man Utd’s ‘new Veron’ could be handed his big chance v Crystal Palace

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Fred to be a success at Old Trafford, comparing the Brazilian midfielder to Juan Sebastian Veron.

The 25-year-old has played just 565 minutes of Premier League football across 10 outings this season since his 2018 move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Can Fred succeed at Old Trafford? Five key things to know…

  1. Fred joined Man Utd from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52m in 2018.
  2. The Brazilian scored 15 goals during his time in Ukraine, assisting another 15.
  3. Since signing for United, however, Fred has scored just one goal with no further assists.
  4. The 25-year-old hasn’t featured for the Red Devils since early January.
  5. However, Solskjaer has backed Fred to adapt to English football and compared him to Juan Sebastian Veron.

In fact, Fred’s last United appearance of any sort was his 62-minute outing in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Reading January but Solskjaer still thinks the £52m-man will flourish for the Red Devils if given time, even comparing him to former teammate, Veron, who made 82 appearances for the club between 2001 and 2003.

“You have to look at the time it needs to settle,” Solskjaer said on Tuesday.

“You look at Juan [Sebastian Veron] – he is one of the best players that I played with – and it took him time to settle. And I am sure that when given the chance and a run in the team Fred will grab the opportunity.”

The Norwegian then eluded to giving the midfielder a run against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, with Man Utd crippled with injuries to the likes of Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard.

“Fred will get his chances, maybe tomorrow,” he added.

Class of 2019?

Given that he won a historic treble alongside them in 1999, Solskjaer knows only too well the success of the ‘class of 92’ at Man Utd.

However, the caretaker boss may be manufacturing his own new crop of starlets, suggesting a couple of the club’s young talents could be thrown into the deep end as a result of United’s injury struggles.

“The kids are joining in [training] today. They’ll be involved in the squad,” Solskjaer said.

“James Garner is a Michael Carrick but 20 years younger, I’m sure he’ll do well and Chongy (Tahith Chong) will be taking people on if he comes on.

“They’re ready, they’re kids.”

United travel to Crystal Palace on Wednesday as Solskjaer attempts to extend his 13-game domestic unbeaten run with the Red Devils.
