Wayne Rooney: Almiron looked like Newcastle’s best player “by a mile”

Newcastle United playmaker Miguel Almirón looked like the club’s best player “by a mile” against Huddersfield Town according to former Premier League striker Wayne Rooney.

Almirón made the big-money switch from MLS side Atlanta United to the Magpies at the end of the January transfer window.

Just how good is Almirón? Five things you need to know…

  1. Throughout his time at Atlanta, the 25-year old made 70 appearances, scoring 22 goals.
  2. His creativity was enough to tempt Newcastle who paid a club-record transfer fee of around £20 million.
  3. The Paraguayan made his debut in Newcastle’s last-minute 1-1 draw away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
  4. Almirón nearly had the perfect start to life at St James’ Park by scoring a delicate chip shot but he hit the post with his effort.
  5. Former Manchester United striker, turned DC United star, Wayne Rooney has heaped praise upon the midfielder.

Speaking to reporters, Rooney was discussing comparisons between the MLS and the Premier League, when naturally Almirón’s name popped into the conversation.

Making his feelings quite clear about the talent Almirón possesses, Rooney marked the former Atlanta man out as the best player in Newcastle’s 2-0 victory over struggling Huddersfield Town.

Rooney said: “The standard of play here maybe took me by surprise a bit. I don’t know if any of you watched the Newcastle game the other day but Almiron was the best player on the pitch by a mile.”

More stars in the MLS?

Rooney moved to DC United following an ultimately unsuccessful return to Goodison Park to play for boyhood club Everton.

Not the first to make the switch from England to the USA, Rooney followed in the footsteps of the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

However, they all decided to head west at the end of their career.

Rooney believes that the standard in the MLS is “fantastic” and that it won’t be long before players will opt to play in America in the peak of their careers, rather than at the end of them.

He continued: “It’s a fantastic league – I came here at 32, hopefully you start getting players in their mid-20’s who instead of going to big clubs in Europe, they can be attracted to come here. It’s a fantastic league and has the foundations to keep going.”
