It seems absurd to think back to a time when Lionel Messi was anything other than the first name on Barcelona’s team sheet.
But the little magician was not always the superstar that we know today – and he didn’t waltz directly into the first team.
Having progressed through the ranks at La Masia, he had to prove his worth with Barcelona B before getting his break under the guidance of manager Frank Rijkaard.
Messi’s introduction to the big time was relatively low key and those in attendance could be excused for not realising that the 82nd-minute substitute would go on to become one of the greatest players of all time.
Why? Well, there were some pretty handy players already on the pitch when Messi was introduced during the latter stages of Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Espanyol back in 2004.
Barcelona legends Carles Puyol, Xavi and Ronaldinho all took part in the game, which is now commonly regarded as the birth of the ‘GOAT’.
Statman Dave is on hand to to talk you through every player who featured on that historic night. So get ready to recall some familiar faces – and realise that you’ve forgotten a few too.
