Spurs weak link has been exposed in “nightmare” display v Burnley – Walters

Tottenham Hotspur’s “weak link” was exposed in their 2-1 Premier League defeat away to Burnley, according to striker Jonathan Walters.

Spurs lost grip on their potential title challenge after a late Ashley Barnes goal saw the Clarets claim all three points at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

Are Spurs out of the title chase? Five things you need to know…

  1. Tottenham Hotspur are third in the Premier League table.
  2. They sit five points behind Manchester City and six behind league leaders Liverpool.
  3. They have won 20 matches and are yet to draw a game in the Premier League this season.
  4. Their defeat to Burnley denied them the opportunity to move within two points of second place.
  5. Spurs now have 11 games to try and put pressure on their title rivals at the top end of the Premier League.

Burnley striker Walters – who has been out injured for the majority of the season – believes that although Spurs possess great quality, centre-back Juan Foyth is the club’s weak link at the heart of the Spurs defence.

Speaking to reporters, Walters admitted Foyth has proven at times that he can be a weakness for the north London side.

He said: “I think he found it very difficult. A couple of times in the first half [Dwight] McNeil got in, a couple of times we got down that side. As we said, on a corner, a set piece, they’re massive in this game, we weren’t creating a lot of chances and that’s all it takes, one corner, one set piece, and a goal.

“If you’re the lesser team of the two, and no disrespect to us, but Tottenham players are better players it’s why they are where they are in the league, you find a weak point in the team and you press on it if it keeps working and keep going after it.

“You’re playing against [Jan] Vertonghen, [Toby] Alderweireld and Foyth and you’re going to let him have the ball, let him bring it out and then put pressure on him and he had a nightmare today and you’re going to keep going and going.

“If you’re going to go out and try play nice football, nine times out of 10, 99 times out of 100, Tottenham will win. You’ve got to find a weakness.”

A big few weeks for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur’s disappointing result against Burnley shouldn’t overshadow the positive work that Mauricio Pochettino has done with this talented Spurs side this season.

The nearest challenger to both Liverpool and City, it isn’t out of the question that with a few wins, the Premier League table could look a little bit brighter for Pochettino’s men.

Elsewhere, a brilliant showing against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League round-of-16 first leg at Wembley Stadium saw them claim a 3-0 victory over their German counterparts, putting them in a great position to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.

A few good results could really ignite their confidence, though they face two big London derbies in their next two games. Up first is a trip to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before welcoming Arsenal to Wembley.
