Bayern ‘end Liverpool chances of signing Timo Werner’

Liverpool’s hopes of signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner appear to be over after it was revealed his agent has agreed a transfer to Bayern Munich.

The German international has been a target of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp but it appears that former Dortmund manager will be left frustrated as Bundesliga giants Munich look set to sign the Leipzig man.

Have Liverpool missed out on signing Timo Werner? F0ur key things to know…

  1. Werner was linked with an £87m move to Anfield last season but the club decided against a formal bid.
  2. Roberto Firmino has been playing deeper on occasion this season, opening up the possibility of Liverpool bringing in a new striker.
  3. Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi have not held down a first team place at Liverpool, with Klopp reportedly turning his attention to Werner.
  4. But, according to reports, Werner has agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich over a transfer in the summer.

Liverpool have been interested in Timo Werner since last season according to reports at the time.

The striker was linked with an £87m move to Merseyside but it was thought that Liverpool wanted to give Rhian Brewster an opportunity to show what he could do rather than spend big on a player from abroad.

Brewster has spent much of this season injured and neither Daniel Sturridge or Divock Origi look likely to remain at the club for much longer.

When speculation emerged last season, Werner was quick to deny rumours he was looking to leave Leipzig.

“I did not want to clarify anything (with regards to my future), just repeat what our sporting director Ralf Rangnick has always said, that he would not let me go – even if I wanted to – in the summer anyway,’ Werner told Kicker back in March 2018.

However, a year on and it appears the player might finally be allowed to leave Leipzig after Sport Bild reported that Werner’s agent has agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich for his client.

On Twitter, the statement read: “Our story, Bayern agrees a deal with Timo Werner’s agent about a deal in 2019 or 2020.”

This will be a blow to Liverpool who have been in a title race with Manchester City for much of this campaign. The Reds’ managing director Billy Hogan had recently revealed the club’s continued determination to invest in new players with Werner thought to be the prime target this summer.

“From our perspective, what you are seeing is a continuation of that performance on the pitch and the reinvestment in the squad, which is the most important thing from our point of view; nothing is a distraction from putting a successful team on the pitch,” Hogan told FC Business

“Putting Jurgen and the guys on the football side in a position to compete at the highest levels, that is always our focus and we see our contribution to that in the form of being able to run the business in a better way and being able to drive revenues to invest back into the team.”

With Werner expected to fetch a fee of around £50m it was hoped Liverpool would lead the chase for the striker but if a deal has been agreed with Bayern the Premier League outfit might have to look elsewhere.
