“Like a PlayStation game” – Van der Vaart explains how Barcelona made Real Madrid feel inferior

Rafael van der Vaart has revealed how Barcelona made Real Madrid feel inferior during his time at the Bernabeu.

Van der Vaart spent two years at Los Blancos between 2008 and 2010, making 73 appearances, but only managed one Spanish Super Cup win as Barca dominated both domestic and European football.

How did Barca dominate Real? Five key things to know…

  1. Rafael van der Vaart played for Real Madrid between 2008 and 2010.
  2. During that time, Barca won two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey and a Champions League.
  3. Those successes included the treble in 2009.
  4. Madrid however, won just one Spanish Super Cup and lost all four El Clasico matches during that time.
  5. Van der Vaart highlighted their 6-2 thrashing in 2009 as ‘like watching a PlayStation game.’

That domination spread into the two clubs’ El Clasico rivalry, with Madrid on the end of a number of defeats to their arch-rivals during that time.

And the former Holland international has recalled just how superior the Blaugrana were to any side in world football during that golden spell, even describing one particular Clasico mauling as being ‘like a PlayStation game’.

“When I was in Madrid, Barca were much better than us, much better than all the other teams in the world at that time,” Van der Vaart told El Larguero.

“I remember the match [that finished] 2-6, it looked like a PlayStation game.”

Real and Barca lock horns once more in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday evening, before this weekend’s La Liga Clasico.

Van der Vaart: Messi is from another world

Lionel Messi scored a superb hat-trick as Barcelona twice came from behind to beat Sevilla 4-2 on Saturday, taking his tally to 25 La Liga goals in 23 games this season.

And just like many pundits and fans, Van der Vaart has been left stunned by another stellar performance from the Argentine ace, describing him as ‘from another world’.

“He’s from another world,” Van der Vaart said.

“I saw him the other day against Sevilla. It’s impossible to stop him, I think so because he appears everywhere.

“He runs with the ball but between speed and technique, you cannot defend him.”
