Joe Cole reckons Mauricio Pochettino’s recent comments could see the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli leave Tottenham in search of silverware.
Spurs fell to a 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Wednesday, ending their already faint hopes of challenging for the Premier League title.
Could Spurs lose their stars? Five key things to know…
- Spurs have become an established Champions League side under the guidance of Pochettino.
- The Lilywhites have finished in the Premier League’s top three for the past three seasons.
- Despite this success, the club are without a trophy since the 2008 League Cup.
- Pochettino believes Spurs are between five and 10 years away from being able to win the Premier League.
- Joe Cole believes that talk could lead to stars such as Kane and Alli leaving the club soon.
And after the game, Pochettino criticised his player’s energy and attitude, adding: “It’s holding us back and it might take five years’ work, 10 years’ work, to change that.”
Cole, who won three Premier League titles with Chelsea during his playing days, believes Pochettino is walking on thin ice with those comments, putting the club at risk of losing star players who will leave in search of trophies.
“If I’m Harry Kane or Dele Alli and my manager says we’re five, 10 years away from winning a trophy, I’m on the phone to my agent,” he told BT Sport.
“He [Pochettino] has made an improvement but I don’t see him making a change in the mentality at Spurs, because you’re still seeing the same problems where you expect things like they’ll lose to Burnley at the weekend.
“All your quality English players, like your (Harry) Winks and your Kanes and your Allis, have their sights set on winning Premier League titles.
“I’d personally think, ‘He thinks we’re, you know’.”

No trophy pressure for Klopp or Pochettino, says Allardyce
Pochettino’s hopes of a trophy this season may have taken a huge body blow with defeat at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, but Jurgen Klopp’s chances were only enhanced after Liverpool maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 win over Watford.
Former Everton and England boss, Sam Allardyce, however believes there is no pressure on either manager to deliver silverware, claiming the owners of both clubs are far too supportive to get hung up on a lack of trophies.
Allardyce told talkSPORT: “No. I think the owners of Liverpool and Tottenham are very supportive.
“I think they would be disappointed, but they would probably say, ‘what do you need to get better?’
“I’m not so sure about Tottenham, in terms of the money they’ll be able to find for Mauricio because of the cost of the stadium, which has to be a factor.
“But at Liverpool, it might be a different story. Their funds are increasing, they’ve got money in the bank and I think they might say, ‘we’ll give you a little bit more to try and win it next season’.
“So I don’t think Klopp or Pochettino will have a problem.”
