Borussia Dortmund chief hails Pochettino’s “result machine”

Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director has dubbed Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side “a kind of result machine”.

The two will face off in Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture with both sides making their way out of particularly tricky groups.

Spurs vs Dortmund: Five things to know going into the first-leg…

  1. Lucien Favre’s Dortmund have been incredible so far in the Bundesliga, currently sitting top of the division having lost only once in 21 games.
  2. Their firepower is similarly fearsome with 54 goals in those 21 league games, with Marco Reus and Paco Alcácer providing the majority of the goals, although both are missing from this tie.
  3. Nonetheless, Spurs managed to make it out of a group with Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan.
  4. Despite this, Spurs will likely be without both Dele Alli and Harry Kane for the opening leg, two of their key players.
  5. Spurs have the home advantage and will be likely to look to capitalise on Dortmund’s absences, at least taking a draw to Germany.

Favre’s Dortmund have been a revelation so far in the Bundesliga, yet the club’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, is still aware of the tactical prowess of his upcoming adversary.

“Of late, they have been like a kind of result machine, churning out excellent results in the league and are chasing Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table,” Zorc told the club’s official website.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke added: “We travel there as Bundesliga league leaders, we aren’t afraid and have a good chance to progress to the next round.”

Although Spurs are missing two of their main men, the Dortmund side is considerably depleted too, missing out on top scorers Reus and Alcácer as well as Łukasz Piszczek, Manuel Akanji and Julian Weigl.

“These games are over”: Favre puts Hoffenheim collapse behind him

Favre’s men were recently knocked out of the DFB Cup on penalties by Werder Bremen, sandwiched in-between two draws in the league, notably against Hoffenheim after Dortmund had a three-goal lead.

On this, Favre said, “These games are over. We have to cling to the positives. That’s part of the game. We have a young team,” before adding, “It doesn’t help to talk about missing players.”

Likely referring to both sides here, Favre and Pochettino will both have to stretch their capabilities in order to get the valuable advantage going into the return leg when both sides should be more fully fleshed out.
