Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has urged the club to sign striker Salomón Rondon permanently this summer.
The 29-year-old is currently on loan from Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion.
Should Newcastle sign Rondon? Five things you need to know…
- Signing for West Brom in 2015, the Venezuelan international made 120 appearances for the Baggies, scoring 28 goals.
- He moved on loan to Newcastle United following West Brom’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
- This season, he has made 21 appearances for the Magpies, scoring seven goals.
- Newcastle are currently sitting in 16th place in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
- Some of Rondon’s former clubs include Zenit St. Petersburg, Malaga and Rubin Kazan.
Speaking to reporters about whether the Premier League club should sign Rondon on a permanent basis, Benitez left both club chairman Mike Ashley and the Newcastle supporters in no doubt as to whether that was his ambition.
Confirming his interest in signing the player, Benitez said: “It’s an easy decision.
“Everybody can see he’s doing well – and I think he can do better.”

The next five are vital for Newcastle
Newcastle United looked set to secure three vital points against Wolves on Monday night, only to concede with practically the last touch of the match.
Wily Boly’s header snatched a draw for seventh-placed Wolves to ensure Newcastle finished the evening just a single point above 18th-placed Southampton.
The next run of fixtures will surely be key for Newcastle and their survival hopes this season.
Their next two matches are at home against two fellow Premier League strugglers in Huddersfield Town and Burnley. The Terriers look set for the drop and although Burnley have turned their fortunes around in recent weeks, still face a fight of their own to stay in the league.
With fixtures against West Ham United, Everton and Bournemouth to follow, these are matches that Benitez will look to as key games to pick up maximum points in.
