Everton have lost identity, says Jermaine Jenas

Jermaine Jenas has questioned the identity of Everton after their 3-1 home defeat to Wolves on Saturday.

The Toffees managed just four shots on target during the entire game as they fell to defeat against seventh-placed Wolves, meaning Marco Silva’s side have now won just four of their last 14 games across all competitions.

Is Silva under pressure at Everton? Five key things to know…

  1. Despite a promising start, Everton have struggled this season and sit ninth in the Premier League table.
  2. The Toffees have leaked 36 goals in their 25 games so far.
  3. Silva has also overseen a run of just four wins in 14 games across all competitions, crashing out of the FA Cup in the process.
  4. BBC pundit, Jermaine Jenas, believes Everton have ‘lost their identity’.
  5. Following their 3-1 defeat to Wolves on Saturday, Everton fans booed their side off the pitch at Goodison Park, with Silva receiving heavy criticism on social media.

And, speaking on BBC One’s Match of the Day on Saturday night, Jenas questioned the identity of the Everton side and also claimed that Silva will be starting to feel the heat.

“I’m not sure I know what Everton are anymore,” he said. “Goodison used to be a really tough place to go and play football. You knew you were going for a tough game.

“I don’t know whether they’re getting caught in between trying to be this footballing side, and with the turn around of players they’ve had.

“When you’re spending a lot of money, that time [to adapt playing styles] does get cut away from you.

“I think, from the start of December, three wins from 12 is not good enough, and one win from the last six at home, that’s why the fans are starting voice their opinions. He’s definitely under a lot of pressure.”

Saturday’s result leaves Everton ninth in the Premier League, five points behind seventh-placed Wolves and facing the prospect of taking on five of the division’s top six in their next home games.

That run starts against defending champions Manchester City on Wednesday.

Silva feels the wrath of Everton fans following Wolves defeat

Everton were roundly booed off the pitch upon Saturday’s final whistle, with pressure growing on Silva to start producing results.

And the apathy among fans of the blue half of Merseyside was clear to see on Twitter, with supporters letting the club’s official account know exactly what they think of Silva’s efforts so far.

Host Jake Entwistle is joined by Sam Long and Will Hall for this week’s Squawka Talker to discuss Man City 3-1 Arsenal, the Bundesliga title race, Gonzalo Higuain’s start to life at Chelsea, the best of the rest beyond the ‘Big Six’ and the upcoming El Clasico.
