Ivan Rakitic agent hits back at Barcelona exit claims

A summer move away from Barcelona for Ivan Rakitic is ‘impossible’, according to the player’s agent.

The 30-year-old has made nearly 250 appearances for the club since moving from Sevilla in 2014 but with Dutch starlet Frenkie de Jong due to arrive at the Nou Camp in the summer, speculation regard Rakitic’s future has increased.

Will Rakitic be at Barcelona next season? Five key things to know…

  1. Rakitic has made almost 250 appearances for Barca since 2014, scoring 34 goals.
  2. The Croatian has helped the Blaugrana to three La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey’s and a Champions League win.
  3. The 30-year-old will face competition from Frenkie de Jong next season, though, following the Dutchman’s summer arrival from Ajax.
  4. Recent speculation had suggested Chelsea would replace Cesc Fabregas with Rakitic, with Inter also interested.
  5. Rakitic’s agent has dismissed this talk and insisted a move away from Barca for his player is ‘impossible’.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Croatia international as they seek a replacement for Cesc Fabregas after his January move to Monaco, but Rakitic’s agent, Arturo Canales, has dismissed this as ‘impossible’.

“Ivan wants to leave Spain in the summer? That’s impossible,” Canales said in light of reports Inter Milan are also interested in him, according to the Evening Standard.

The midfielder has made 33 appearances for the Blaugrana this season, more than any other player at the club.

Rakitic: I want to stay for years

Rakitic still has two-and-a-half years to run on his current deal, taking him to the summer of 2021, with a reported release clause of €125 million (£110m).

Last week at El Mundo Deportivo’s awards ceremony, though, Rakitic himself expressed his desire to renew that contract and stay at the Nou Camp ‘for many years’.

“I would like to renew and stay for many years,” he said, according to Football Espana.

Barca currently sit top of the La Liga table and face Lyon in the Champions League round-of-16 later this month, while their Copa del Rey semi-final tie with rivals Real Madrid leaves them in with the chance of securing a treble this season.
