Jadon Sancho: Why I admire Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic

Jadon Sancho has revealed Christian Pulisic’s success at Borussia Dortmund influenced his decision to leave Manchester City for Germany.

Sancho has been a huge hit in the Bundesliga since arriving at Dortmund in 2017, while Pulisic signed for Chelsea in January before being loaned back to the German club until the summer.

Pulisic vs Sancho: Who has shown more promise? Five key things to know…

  1. Pulisic, 20, and Sancho, 18, are among the most highly-rated young players on the planet.
  2. Sancho hasn’t been playing regular first-team football for long, making 38 senior appearances since joining Dortmund 18 months ago.
  3. Pulisic first broke into the Dortmund team in 2015/16, making a total of 117 appearances for the club since his debut.
  4. Sancho has scored eight goals in all competitions this season, more than Pulisic has ever managed in a single campaign.
  5. The England international has scored six goals and provided 10 assists in 20 Bundesliga games this season; Pulisic has scored one goal and provided two assists in 13 league games.

Both players made their debut at a very young age for both club and country – Pulisic has already played 23 times for the United States national team.

And Sancho claims Pulisic’s game time and development at Dortmund inspired him to take a chance and join the eight-time German champions.

“The club had shown with a player like Christian Pulisic that they were going in the right way, playing youngsters and giving them a chance,” Sancho told ESPN.

“He came from the same situation as me, leaving his family behind.

“He was so young, and he was brave enough. America is a lot further away than England and he’s taken a bigger step than I have done. How he’s handled that, what he does on the pitch, his mentality [towards] football, it’s just crazy. The passion he has. I admire him.”

Sancho: I look up to Pulisic

Sancho went on to reiterate the strength of character Pulisic showed by leaving America for Germany at such a young age.

He added: “He’s an outstanding player, I really do look up to him. Him going away from home shows that you have to do things to get out of your comfort zone, sometimes.

“I feel it’s worked for him and it’s working for me now, because we’re both staying focussed and keep training hard.”

Whether Pulisic succeeds in the Premier League could have a bearing on Sancho one day returning to England – the teenager was recently linked with Manchester United.
