Jamie Carragher has reiterated his claim that Manchester United boasts a better squad than Liverpool.
The Reds, chasing a first English championship since 1990, are currently 14 points ahead of United with 13 matches to go.
How different are Liverpool and Man Utd’s squads? Four things to know…
- Liverpool have used 21 players in the Premier League this season (10 players with 20 or more appearances).
- No fewer than four players have featured in each of their opening 25 league games: Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
- Manchester United, under two managers, have used three more players (seven players with 20 or more appearances).
- Only David de Gea has featured in all of their Premier League outings.
Jurgen Klopp’s side went into their recent meeting with West Ham missing four key players through injury: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum – usually found in Klopp’s strongest XI – were sidelined and could only watch the Reds being held to a 1-1 draw, thus dropping two valuable points at the London Stadium.
It was a second consecutive game Liverpool failed to win, following a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City, which has allowed Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur back in the season’s title race.
For some observers, it strengthened their notion that Liverpool’s first XI is among Europe’s best but they are lacking adequate squad depth to compete on numerous fronts, something Carragher touched on when making his analysis following their draw in east London.

“I said yesterday Manchester United have a better squad than Liverpool. People may have thought it was a strange thing to say but I think we’re seeing little signs of it,” he said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“On the right back situation, Klopp’s made a mistake letting [Nathaniel] Clyne go. I know there were a couple of injuries but you don’t need to let him go — keep him there. At the moment James Milner has played there twice now and watching him you can’t quite believe he played left back so well for so long. He looks like someone completely out of position.
“Keita, who he paid big money for, looked quiet and keeps losing the ball. Firmino doesn’t look himself. Salah we didn’t see anything from tonight.
“I think that’s a worry going forward, not in terms of this pressure in the lead, more that when there’s a few injuries in different positions it doesn’t look like that solid Liverpool side we’ve seen for the last few weeks.”
What’s next for Liverpool?
The Reds have a chance to put things right when Bournemouth visit this weekend ahead of a mouthwatering Champions League round-of-16 first leg clash with fellow five-time European champions Bayern Munich.
After that contest is a small matter of a trip to Old Trafford where they face a resurgent Manchester United who have claimed nine wins and one draw since appointing club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim boss.
