Man Utd XI: Solskjaer confirms Lindelof CB partner as Rashford returns vs PSG

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named Eric Bailly in his starting XI to face Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

It is hoped Bailly’s pace will do well up against the terrifying Mbappe, with the Ivorian partnering Victor Lindelof at the heart of United’s defence.

What is the big team news for both sides? Five key things to know…

  1. Going into Tuesday’s game it was confirmed PSG would be without injured trio Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Thomas Meunier.
  2. As a result, Kylian Mbappe starts as a centre-forward, with Marco Verratti also continuing in midfield.
  3. There is also a start for Angel Di Maria on his return to Old Trafford.
  4. Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has recalled Marcus Rashford to his starting XI after the forward was rested at the weekend.
  5. Eric Bailly also starts, being picked over Phil Jones to partner Victor Lindelof.

Bailly is one of four changes from the team which eased past Fulham at the weekend, starting in place of Phil Jones.

Marcus Rashford has recovered from his slight injury problems, replacing Romelu Lukaku as United’s starting striker, with Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard also coming in for Diogo Dalot and Juan Mata respectively.

Meanwhile, PSG have opted to field Kylian Mbappe as their starting forward in the absence of both Neymar and Edinson Cavani.

The Frenchman is flanked by Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria, who returns to Old Trafford for the first since leaving United in 2015.

There is also a second consecutive start for Marco Verratti in midfield, with the Italian only making his comeback from injury at the weekend.

When the draw was first made, PSG were firm favourites to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. But the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer at Old Trafford, combined with PSG’s injury problems have seen the tie become more evenly matched.

Manchester United fans happy with centre-back selection

Though PSG are without Neymar and Edinson Cavani, the prospect of facing Kylian Mbappe remains something many United fans had feared.

But these fears seem to have been eased upon seeing Eric Bailly, and not Phil Jones, starting alongside Victor Lindelof.
