Maurizio Sarri “not sure” if Chelsea’s players are behind him

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri isn’t sure whether the players are still behind him following their poor form.

The Blues have been struggling for goals and consistency of late and frustrations towards Sarri’s position at the club have heightened in recent weeks.

How subpar have Chelsea been? Five things you need to know…

  1. Maurizio Sarri took over from Antonio Conte this summer and started the season off in terrific form.
  2. The club then struggled to keep pace at the top of the Premier League table but found themselves 11 points clear of leaders Manchester City in fourth.
  3. Chelsea have lost three of their last four Premier League games without scoring and conceding 12 goals.
  4. They were knocked out of the FA Cup fifth round by Manchester United on Monday night following a 2-0 defeat.
  5. Sarri’s future at the club has been questioned, with the Italian telling reporters that he isn’t sure his players are behind him.

Speaking following the club’s disappointing performance against Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round defeat at Stamford Bridge, Sarri fielded questions regarding his relationship with his squad.

Asked whether the players were still playing for their manager, Sarri’s optimism couldn’t hide his uncertainty.

Sarri said: “I think so, I am not sure but I think so.

“The situation with the players is really good for their relationship, but the relationship is not so important. It’s important to play and get the results but my relationship with my players at the moment is good.”

“It is not my problem”

Naturally, a club the size of Chelsea shouldn’t be collapsing to repeated defeats with little resistance which is exactly what they are doing at present.

Key losses against Arsenal, Bournemouth, Manchester City and United in the FA Cup have seen Sarri’s well-renowned ‘Sarri-ball’ criticised for its stubborn approach.

With Sarri intending to stick with the style of play that saw him gain success in Italy – most notably with Napoli – he was asked whether he will be given the time to ensure his squad know how to perform within his tactical system.

He said: “It’s not my problem, my problem is to start the work tomorrow morning to improve in a few days, to try find more determination and aggressiveness because we conceded the second goal without the determination and aggressiveness.”
