Unai Emery says he is not worried about Arsenal’s inability to keep clean sheets as his primary focus is on winning games.
The Gunners ran out narrow 2-1 winners at Huddersfield Town on Saturday, which saw them return to victorious ways following a humbling 3-1 loss away to champions Manchester City.
Should there be concern? Four things to know…
- Arsenal have kept four Premier League clean sheets across their opening 26 matches this season.
- 2-0 v Everton (September 2018), 2-0 v Watford (September 2018), 1-0 v Huddersfield Town (December 2018) and 2-0 v Chelsea (January 2019).
- Their last clean sheet on the road came in Arsene Wenger’s final game in charge (1-0 v Huddersfield Town, May 2018).
- Arsenal have also conceded the most goals (37) of any side currently in the league’s top six.
Arsenal, who have registered four Premier League clean sheets across their opening 26 matches, were on course to make it five against the struggling Terriers.
However, in the final seconds of the game, Sead Kolašinac inadvertently put the ball into his own net just as his side were on course to claim a 2-0 win.
It prevented Bernd Leno from picking up his (and the club’s) fifth shut-out of the season, which was put forward to Emery after the game.

“Yeah, but we won. Above all to win the game,” he told reporters (via the Metro).
“We spoke in the dressing room, after the win it is to take the individual targets also. The most important target is to score one more than them. After, clean sheet. ‘The last action they scored and maybe they deserved that.
“A clean sheet is another thing we want before every match but we spoke about a lot of things about the match and the win is the first thing. We just had to score one goal more than them. The attitude is great from everybody.”
The fight for fourth
As things currently stand Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham occupy the Premier League’s top three positions, which means the final Champions League spot will be fought for between three clubs: Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.
United are the form side following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment, but the gap separating them and their rivals is a single point with just over 10 matches to play.
Arsenal, who the Red Devils knocked out of the FA Cup recently, welcome their old foes back to the Emirates Stadium next month. March also sees them visit Wembley for the north London derby against Spurs.
