United resurgence will be “killing” Mourinho, says Crooks

Manchester United’s resurgence under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be “killing” former manager Jose Mourinho, according to football pundit Garth Crooks.

United have won 10 out of 11 games under Solskjaer since he took over from Mourinho at the back end of 2018.

What has happened at United? Five things you need to know…

  1. Since Solsjaker’s appointment, United have scored 28 goals in 11 games.
  2. From the start of the season under Mourinho, it took United 19 games to score the same amount of goals.
  3. To date, they have only conceded seven goals under Solsjaker.
  4. United conceded seven goals in their opening three Premier League fixtures.
  5. Players such as Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have rediscovered their form, scoring a combined total of 17 goals in the Solskjaer era.

Manchester United defeated Premier League strugglers Fulham 3-0 at Craven Cottage this weekend.

Two goals from Pogba and a smart Anthony Martial finish saw United leapfrog Chelsea and Arsenal into fourth place in the league, the last Champions League qualification spot.

Crooks believes that the complete turn around in fortune on the football pitch will be “killing” former club boss Mourinho, who struggled to maintain any consistent form with the club this season prior to his dismissal.

Writing on BBC Sport, Crooks praised Martial’s goal against Fulham alongside his Mourinho assumptions.

He wrote: “His goal at Fulham was simply superb. He went past Fulham’s Denis Odoi and Maxime le Marchand as if they weren’t there.

“The France international then calmly stroked the ball past Sergio Rico into the back of the net to send United fourth in the table. United’s total resurgence must be killing Jose Mourinho.”

A big two weeks for United

The Red Devils have been producing some fantastic stuff since their former club striker took over the reins in the Old Trafford dugout in December.

Unbeaten, playing attacking football and getting the best out of the likes of Pogba and Rashford who were struggling under Mourinho, Solskjaer is doing a brilliant job in turning United’s season around.

However, their next line of fixtures could prove crucial in their fortunes this season, as well as defining Solskjaer’s future at the club.

They face oil-rich Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford in the Champions League, with the return leg taking place in just under a month.

An FA Cup fifth round tie away to Chelsea – who lost 6-0 to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon – offers United a real chance of getting their hands on the FA Cup once more.

After that, they face arch-rivals, Liverpool, with United surely aiming to do their best to deny the Reds their first league title in 29 years.
