Manchester United and England record goalscorer Wayne Rooney believes he is still capable of playing at the highest level.
The 33-year-old relocated to MLS franchise D.C. United in 2018 following an illustrious 16-year Premier League career.
Wayne Rooney, Premier League legend: Five key things to know…
- Wayne Rooney has scored the second most goals in Premier League history (208) behind Alan Shearer (260).
- Only Ryan Giggs (162) and Cesc Fabregas (111) have created more goals in Premier League history than Rooney (103).
- His 183 goals for Manchester United is the most by a player for one Premier League club.
- Rooney has scored more away goals (94) than any player in Premier League history.
- The Englishman has reached double figures in Premier League goals in 12 different seasons – more than anyone.
Rooney, who came through Everton’s youth set-up, would spend the majority of his Premier League career at Old Trafford where he lifted no fewer than five titles between 2004 and 2017.
After registering 253 goals across 559 matches in all competitions he’d return to his boyhood club for one season where he bagged 11 goals across 40 matches before moving stateside.
D.C. United would become his third professional club and he made an immediate impression. Rooney would help the Washington D.C.-based club reach the MLS playoffs.
However, they were knocked out by Columbus Crew on penalties (in which his attempt was saved), though he finished as the club’s MVP.
His rejuvenation has rekindled Rooney’s appetite for the game and he believes he’s still good enough to play in the Premier League.

“If I’m being honest, I know quality wise, I can still play in the Premier League,” Rooney told CNN Sport.
“I know that. I’ve always been a confident person, and so I have high expectations of myself.
“I’ve come here expecting to do well and I think there was a surprise from people who have their opinions, which is fair enough, but I never doubted myself at all.”
Where could Rooney go?
It’s hard to see where Rooney could end up if he ever returns to English top division football.
Very few clubs would be able to handle his wages, even if he brings a wealth of experience, and then there’s the emotional factor: would the former ‘boy wonder’ contemplate representing a club not called Everton or Manchester United?
For now, his focus is on returning championship glory to D.C. United, who were last crowned MLS Cup winners in 2004.
