We asked a fan of every Premier League club: ‘Who is the first player you would sell if given the chance?’

A forgettable January transfer window is fading into memory quicker than Tim Sherwood can claim credit for the rise of Harry Kane.

But that doesn’t mean fans have stopped dreaming of the day a particular player finally gets off their club’s books.

You know the type. Maybe it’s someone who could command a huge transfer fee and provide a big boost to the coffers?

Or someone who doesn’t fit the manager’s playing style – and never will? Perhaps someone who simply isn’t fit to wear the shirt?

This is, of course, not a reality. (Just like Sherwood’s story about discovering Kane all on his own).

But what if supporters could get their wish and were given then chance to instantly sell one player form their club’s current squad?

Well, we asked a fan of each Premier League team to make their choice…

Arsenal fan

@dodddy_2: “The first player at Arsenal I would sell is Shkodran Mustafi, who is without doubt one of the worst defenders to put on an Arsenal shirt in recent years.

“His rashness, lack of discipline and tendency to dive in infuriates fans on a regular basis. On top of that we would get a fair sum for him from a European team to invest in a competent replacement.”

Bournemouth fan

@CherryChimes: “Come and get Jordon Ibe, please! He might drive a smart car but tell us another club where he can park it. While we are offloading it may be time to let Lys Mousset go as well as he’s not kicked on.

“Callum Wilson is the big money ticket at Bournemouth, but I like the sound of holding out for £70m plus.”

Brighton fan

@wearebrighton: “Other than add thousands of followers to the club’s Instagram page, Alireza Jahanbakhsh has done nothing so far in a Brighton shirt. He doesn’t look like a winger, he certainly isn’t a striker and he isn’t fit to lace the boots of Pascal Gross when we play with a number 10.

“He needs a big final few months of the season if he’s to convince anyone that he’s anywhere near worthy of being the club’s record purchase. If not, then we should sell in the summer to at least try and recoup some of the record £17m we paid for his services.”

Burnley fan

@TurfyTopper: “Since Tom Heaton’s return to the team, Burnley have been unbeaten in seven games, which has yielded a better points return than Joe Hart has had in the previous 18 games.

“Hart was arguably a Player of the Season contender until he was dropped just after Boxing Day, however, Sean Dyche still has the young and budding Nick Pope at his disposal who has just returned from injury.”

Cardiff fan

@TheGrangeEnd: “Lee Tomlin. He hasn’t been great during his time at Cardiff but seems to be flourishing on loan at Peterborough. I’m sure Cardiff are keen to get his wages off the books too.”

Chelsea fan

@FutbolChelsea: “First player I would sell would definitely be Willian. He just isn’t good enough, he’s not suited to Maurizio Sarri’s style of play, he’s way past his prime and he is blocking Callum Hudson-Odoi from getting game time. We would be much better off without him.”

Crystal Palace fan

@Nick_CPFC: “Alexander Sørloth – whilst he’s still young, it’s already clear that he isn’t cut out for Premier League football. The glaring lack of forward movement from the Norwegian makes it difficult to see him fitting into Roy Hodgson’s plans.

“He’s currently on loan at the Belgium club Gent, but most Palace fans wouldn’t be too disappointed if he sealed a permanent move there in the Summer.”

Everton fan

@TomClarke40: “Sandro Ramírez – signed to replace Romelu Lukaku, the ex-Barcelona striker failed miserably. Shipped out on loan to Real Sociedad this season, Everton could do without his reported £120,000-a-week wages.”

Fulham fan

@FulhamNiceGuys: “I would terminate the loans of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Andre Schürrle as they offer the side nothing.

“For big money, because at this time we don’t deserve him, we should cash in on Ryan Sessegnon.”

Huddersfield fan

@TOTT_htafc: “Arriving from Ingolstadt in the summer of 2017, there was much promise about the one-time capped Switzerland international Florent Hadergjonaj.

“However, despite playing his part in Town’s miraculous survival last season, this season has demonstrated that the full-back is simply out of his depth, struggling with both the physicality and pace of the English game.”

Leicester fan

@Vardesque: “Demarai Gray – he hasn’t improved in over three years at the club, his decision making is still poor and his end product is lacking.

“Given that he’s English and still young we could easily get £30m+ for him in the current market and then reinvest in someone a level above.”

Liverpool fan

@LFCTransferRoom: “With Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Alberto Moreno all out of contract this summer, the only fringe player to be sold is Adam Lallana.

“His high wages no longer reflect his squad status, with the team surpassing him during his time out injured.”

Manchester City fan

@SuperbiaProeIia: “We’ve got a tight knit squad who are all fully invested in the ‘Pep’ system. We have a very young but valuable squad. Everyone’s got a long-term contract and I would not sell any of the top players – so nobody!”

Manchester United fan

@Alex Leggate: “It would have to be Alexis Sanchez. Although he’s shown brief flashes under Ole, his overall game has completely disappeared from his Arsenal days. Maybe he’s not accustomed to not being the biggest fish in the pond? It would be one hell of a wage off the bill.”

Newcastle fan

@100PctMAGS: “I would say Karl Darlow as I don’t really rate the lad and we already have enough in that position of the team.

“As for transfer fee for him I don’t think you would get a big fee – maybe £5m to £10m at most. He never really got going at Newcastle in my opinion and is more suited to the Championship than Premier League.”

Southampton fan

@FreshSaints: “Wesley Hoedt – the ex-Lazio man arrived showing much promise but it quickly emerged that he was way out of his depth in the Premier League which, combined with an attitude problem, should see him leave permanently this summer.

“Meanwhile, Jan Bednarek is still slightly rough around the edges, but has the potential to be a real diamond. No one will be surprised to see him leave for big money in the coming years.”

Tottenham fan

@atthepeak: “The sale of Dele Alli wouldn’t be universally popular, but the 22-year-old would command a huge fee which would allow us to invest in other key areas.”

Watford fan

@AndyLewers: “The player I’d have to lose from Watford, if pushed, would be Miguel Britos.

“Whilst he’s made a couple of appearances this season and has impressed each time, the remaining players in the squad each have a genuine chance of breaking into the first XI.

“For Britos his chances are unlikely, making him the perfect candidate to be first out the door.”

West Ham fan

@Irons_Home: “After the recent events with him wanting to go to China, we should ship Marco Arnautovic off for the £50m reported fee in the summer.

“We’d have £50m plus £100k-a-week saved in wages to get a hungrier striker in who wants to play in Claret and Blue.”

Wolves fan

@STurnerTipster: “With Wolves enjoying a terrific first season back in the Premier League, the appetite and clamour for players to be sold is virtually non existent.

“However, the place in the squad of Helder Costa could be at risk given the Portuguese winger is one of few members of last season’s Championship-winning squad struggling to make an impact on the Premier League to date.

“Apart from a well-taken goal in the 3-1 win over Spurs at Wembley, the 25-year-old has looked to lack confidence for much of the season.”
