“Bad translating!” – Schurrle refutes Fulham relegation claim

Andre Schurrle has insisted he was misquoted in an interview which suggested his two-year loan with Fulham will end if the Londoners are relegated.

The German joined Fulham from Borussia Dortmund last summer and is set to stay with the Cottagers until the end of next season, regardless of whether the club is relegated from the Premier League.

How has Schurrle performed for Fulham? Five key things to know…

  1. It was considered quite the coup when Fulham lured Schurrle to Craven Cottage last summer.
  2. However, the newly-promoted team started the season poorly and haven’t improved much since Claudio Rainiri took charge.
  3. Fulham are currently seven points from safety, and only Huddersfield (-33) have a worse goal difference than Ranieri’s side (-30).
  4. Schurrle has scored six goals in 21 Premier League games but hasn’t been able to help the side move out of the relegation places.
  5. The 28-year-old scored just three league goals across two Bundesliga campaigns with Dortmund.

Schurrle gave an interview to German publication Kicker and his words have been translated into English by a number of outlets.

However, he has taken issue with one of the translated quotes that appears to suggest he will leave Fulham if they are relegated to the Championship.

In a message to Fulham fans on Twitter, Schurrle wrote: “Please don’t believe what this newspaper is writing because it is not even close to what I said.”

“Just very bad translating from German out of context and trying to produce a false headline. Let’s stick together and fight till the end!”

A crucial few weeks for Fulham

Fulham must start to pick up points if they are to ensure their Premier League status, but the fixture computer has thrown up a difficult February and March.

Over the next few weeks, Fulham face Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City – all at Craven Cottage.

They at least have home advantage, but the strugglers will do well to get anything out of those four games.

Matches against the likes of West Ham United, Southampton and Leicester City are far more winnable, and Ranieri will be targeting maximum points from meetings with opponents outside the top six.
