Former Man Utd star tells Harry Kane to leave "normal" Spurs

Former Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has urged Harry Kane to leave Tottenham and win trophies elsewhere.

Ibrahimovic has won major honours in England, Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands, while Kane is yet to win a trophy with Spurs.

Does Kane’s talent deserve more trophies? Five key things to know…

  1. Kane has scored 160 times in 244 Spurs appearances, and has 20+ goals in each of the last five seasons across all competitions.
  2. However, he is yet to win a trophy in north London with Spurs.
  3. Tottenham were involved in the Premier League title race in 2015/16 and 2016/17, lost the EFL Cup final in 2016 and were eliminated in the FA Cup semi-final last term and the campaign before.
  4. Kane is considered one of the best strikers in world football after winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup last summer.
  5. But Spurs are yet to make a signing this summer and there are question marks over Kane’s ability to win a trophy at a club with lesser financial ambition than their rivals.

Kane has found the net 20 times in 41 matches across all competitions this season but is currently sidelined with an ankle injury that could keep him out until March.

But despite Kane’s impressive goal record, Ibrahimovic believes the 25-year-old must leave Tottenham if he is to be remembered for winning silverware.

“When I was in England, I saw him play. I think he is a good striker. He’s still developing, he’s doing good things,” Ibrahimovic said, according to Goal.

“But I always say, playing in a big club, performing good is different from playing in… with all respect to Tottenham, a ‘normal’ club.

“I think he can make it. He just needs to make the move, and people will remember you for what you win. So if he wants to win, then yes, I think he needs to change.”

‘Spurs risk losing key players with trophy drought’

Despite their current injury crisis, Tottenham currently possess some of the most talented players in the Premier League.

With that comes an expectation of success, and former striker turned pundit Chris Sutton has questioned Spurs’ capacity to win trophies in the future if they aren’t able to with the current group of players.

Sutton also suggested the likes of Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen will be looking to move on if Tottenham’s drought continues.

He told BBC 5live last week: “Are Spurs, with the personal, the players they have, the talent they have in this team – if they don’t win a trophy now, is it ever going to happen?”

“Alli, Kane, Eriksen. Top, top players. Eventually they’ll want to look elsewhere and that would be the worry if I was a Spurs fan.

“I’ve got a lot of admiration for Tottenham but you can’t keep being a nearly club.”
