Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool wanted to sign Jadon Sancho before he joined Borussia Dortmund but Manchester City were unwilling to sell to another English club.
Sancho has seen his reputation grow exponentially in Germany after failing to make a single senior appearance for City.
Could Sancho return to England? Five key things to know…
- Sancho was linked with Tottenham before he left City for Dortmund in the summer of 2017.
- He has since broken into the senior Three Lions set up, boosting his reputation back in England.
- Manchester United are the latest Premier League club to be linked (via the Mirror) with a move for the 18-year-old.
- After facing Spurs at Wembley last week, Sancho said: “I’m just happy playing in England in front of my family.”
- The teenager has scored eight goals and provided 13 assists across all competitions so far this season.
Liverpool are the latest club to have revealed they held an interest in Sancho before his move to the Bundesliga after Klopp admitted the Merseysiders wanted the winger.
And the German is unsure why English clubs usually refuse to do business together for fear of strengthening a rival.
“Buying English players is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho,” Klopp said, according to the Daily Mail.
“We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs.
“I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany which is a wonderful league. I don’t see German football in a bad situation.”

How did Sancho perform against Tottenham?
Sancho had a mixed game in his first senior encounter with an English club, as did his team.
Dortmund were the better side in the first half against Spurs last week and were unfortunate to go into the break being held to a goalless draw.
But Tottenham came out much improved in the second half, scored three goals and ultimately kept Sancho quiet.
Sancho was one of the best players on the pitch for 45 minutes, causing trouble on the flanks with Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic.
In total, Sancho completed three of his four attempted take-ons (only Jan Vertonghen completed more with four) but completed just one cross.
He will be eager to improve on those numbers in the second leg next month.
