Liverpool deserve more respect as they chase the Premier League title, according to former Manchester United striker, Dimitar Berbatov.
The Reds are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League table as they look to win a first title in 29 years.
Are Liverpool given enough respect? Five key things to know…
- Liverpool are looking to win the league for the first time since 1990.
- The Reds currently sit three points clear at the top of the table following their 3-0 win over Bournemouth.
- But Jurgen Klopp’s men had drawn their past two games prior to the Bournemouth win and had been briefly overtaken by chasing Manchester City.
- This led to some claims that Liverpool were set to crumble under pressure once more in the title race.
- But Dimitar Berbatov believes the Reds are not being shown enough respect.
Liverpool had commanded a larger lead over the defending champions but consecutive draws against Leicester City and West Ham United saw Man City overtake the Reds on goal difference going into the weekend, albeit having played a game more.
Following their back-to-back draws, many had begun to question Liverpool’s handling of pressure given the Reds’ recent history in title races.
But Berbatov, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United in 2009 and 2011, believes Liverpool deserve more respect than they are currently given.
“People need to pay Liverpool a little respect – they play great football, have a great coach and great players,” he told Betfair.
“They are still in the fight.
“If you play for Liverpool you need to be good and you need to know how to handle pressure. That is going to be needed as it looks like a tough season that could easily go down to the final game.
“That’s good for us watching from the side, but I’ve been there and it is nerve-wracking for the fans, players and staff of the clubs involved.
“Both Liverpool and City would love to be champions well before the final couple of games but I don’t see it happening unless one of them – and Spurs, too, of course – blows up.”
Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth ensured the pressure is now on Manchester City in the Premier League title race, with Pep Guardiola’s side set to face a difficult game against Chelsea on Sunday.

Can Liverpool remain calm under pressure?
Though Liverpool fans will now be focussing on their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich in midweek, one eye will also be on the next Premier League match.
Up next in the league for the Reds in their quest for the title is a match against a revived Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Jurgen Klopp’s men also still have to face Tottenham and Chelsea before the season is up, though their remaining fixture list is slightly easier than their title rivals’.
And former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Reds can still go all the way, courtesy of a five-game winning run yet to come.
“Liverpool shouldn’t forget that they are a top side and what we’re seeing won’t continue, this won’t be happening every game,” he said.
“Liverpool will go on a run of winning five or six games at some stage before the end of the season, there’s no doubt about it.
“They are a fantastic side, as are Tottenham and Man City. This run that they’re in may just be a little blip, but they will come back.”
