Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson believes the Reds will win the Premier League title if they beat Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp’s side travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face a resurgent United side that has won 11 of their 13 games under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Can Liverpool end their 29-year title drought? Five things you need to know…
- Liverpool are level on points with Man City at the top of the Premier League table.
- City, however, have a superior goal difference to the Reds, who have a game in hand against Man Utd on Sunday.
- Klopp’s side have lost just one league game this season, a 2-1 away defeat to Man City in January.
- Liverpool haven’t won a league title since 1990.
- Thompson believes victory over their fierce rivals on Sunday will guarantee Liverpool that coveted league title.
Liverpool are joint-top of the Premier League with Manchester City and know a win over their fierce rivals will see them go three points clear at the summit of the table, with Pep Guardiola’s men not set to play a top-flight fixture this weekend.
And Thompson believes a victory in this clash will confirm Merseyside as the destination for the title for the first time in 29 years.
“If we (Liverpool) win on Sunday, we will win the title,” Thompson told Sky Sports. “And that is definite because it is that sort of game to give you that push towards the end of the season.”
Fellow Sky Sports pundit and former Southampton striker, Matt Le Tissier, also agreed that Sunday will be a decisive day in the title race.
“There is a long way to go yet and you get some funny results in the run-ins, the teams at the bottom scrapping for their lives will often take points off the big boys at the top,” Le Tissier said.
“But it is a massive game in terms of Liverpool and where they currently sit in the Premier League table and their chances of going on to win the title.
“Obviously, a defeat here hands Manchester City the initiative and you would expect, if that did happen, for City to go on and win the title.
“But if Liverpool do win at Old Trafford, I think that will give them a massive confidence boost and then they are still in the box seat, in terms of it is theirs to lose.”

Thompson: Premier League fear Liverpool dominance
As ever, social media has been rife with rival fans trying to discredit Liverpool’s title challenge this season, as well as being quick to mock their failings in the past.
However, Thompson believes that is as a result of the rest of the English top flight ‘fearing’ another period of dominance from Liverpool, reminiscent to that which saw the Reds claim 11 league titles and six European Cups between 1973 and 1990.

Thompson added: “A lot of fans are worried about the cycle coming around again, not just Manchester United.
“They are frightened. That’s why they are starting to get nervous of Liverpool winning the Premier League again.
“A lot of people don’t want it like the 70s and 80s again and a lot of people wouldn’t want Manchester United to do it again.”
