Napoli have put the sale of Marek Hamsik on hold, claiming the payment methods put forward by Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang do not coincide with a previously agreed fee.
A deal was said to be close to completion, but Napoli revealed the move has been suspended via an announcement on their official Twitter account.
Will Hamsik’s China move still happen? Four key things to know…
- Hamsik looked all set to join Dalian Yifang but Napoli’s announcement has thrown the deal into doubt.
- According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Hamsik said on Tuesday he will leave Napoli “tomorrow or the day after”.
- It now appears unlikely the move will go through this week with financial reasons seemingly the main issue holding a deal back.
- Hamsik has scored 121 goals and won two Coppa Italia trophies during his 11-and-a-half years at Napoli.
Hamsik, a Slovakia international with 111 caps for his country, has been one of the standout midfielders in Serie A over the last decade.
And it looks like his stay in Italy is set to be extended for just a little longer as Napoli dig their heals in over the fee they expect to receive from Dalian Yifang.
The club tweeted: “Napoli has decided to suspend the sale of Marek Hamsik to the Chinese [club Dalian Yifang] because the methods of payment of the amount agreed do not coincide with the agreements previously reached.”

How badly will Napoli miss Hamsik?
It is unclear whether Hamsik’s move is at risk of being called off altogether, but there remains a good chance the Slovakian will no longer be a Napoli player quite soon.
Hamsik has been one of the club’s leading figures in recent years. He has scored 10 or more goals across all competitions in eight of his 12 seasons in Naples.
This term, however, his influence has decreased. Hamsik has scored just one goal in 19 appearances across all competitions.
Regardless of his dwindling impact, the 31-year-old will be remembered as a club legend.
