Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has expressed his hope Tottenham Hotspur win the Premier League title, though the defender think it’s unlikely.
Spurs are currently third in the table, five points behind leaders Liverpool and two points behind second-placed Manchester City.
Can Spurs win the Premier League? Five key things to know…
- Spurs beat Newcastle United 1-0 on Saturday and currently sit third in the Premier League table.
- The Londoners are five points behind leaders Liverpool.
- Pochettino’s side still have trips to Anfield and the Etihad to come in the final part of the season.
- Gary Neville hopes Spurs can overhaul Man City and Liverpool, but thinks they will fall away.
- The former England right-back believes their title rivals have more ‘squad depth’ than Spurs.
The north London club still have to travel to Anfield and the Etihad in the final part of the season, meaning they could have a huge say on the destination of the Premier League trophy.
But Neville, who won eight league titles with Man Utd during his playing days, doubts Mauricio Pochettino’s side have enough to mount a serious challenge, despite hoping they win out in the end.
“I always think with Tottenham, they’ll keep getting close and then dropping back again – I don’t think they’ve quite got it,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“They’ve not got quite as good a team as City and Liverpool and there is no one who would like to see them win the league more than me this season… It would represent an incredible job done by Pochettino over the last three or four years [if they won the Premier League], it would be amazing because he almost deserves it in some ways, but I just feel like they’re not going to win it and they’re going to fall short.
“I’d expect them to beat Watford and Newcastle because they’re a good side, but they’re not going to have the squad depth or the quality to be able to compete with City and Liverpool.
“That is not a criticism and I know Tottenham fans have been disappointed in the last few weeks and I’ve dismissed them for the title because they are so close. I hope they win it, but I don’t think they will.”

Redknapp speaks out on Spurs’ transfer dealings
Spurs’ lack of signings in the last two transfer windows has been seen as a reason why they cannot truly compete for the Premier League title by many fans and pundits.
However, former manager, Harry Redknapp, believes Pochettino ‘didn’t want any January signings’ and that the Argentine already has enough ‘fantastic players’ at his disposal.
“He has got a fantastic squad there. They have got fantastic centre-halves and midfielders galore,” Redknapp said.
“Pochettino didn’t want any players. I know that for a fact. He is happy with his squad and they have proven him right.”
