None of Everton’s signings have been a hit – Cascarino

Everton are no better off under Marco Silva than they were with Sam Allardyce in charge, according to Tony Cascarino.

The Toffees are currently ninth in the Premier League having lost 10 of their opening 25 games and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Millwall, with Silva’s impact at the club since taking over in the summer being questioned.

Were Everton better off under Allardyce? Five key things to know…

  1. Sam Allardyce was appointed as caretaker manager of Everton last season after Ronald Koeman was sacked.
  2. The former England manager steadied a rocky ship at Goodison Park but was heavily criticised for his style of play.
  3. Allardyce was replaced by Marco Silva in the summer, but the Portuguese has not had the impact Everton were hoping for.
  4. And Tony Cascarino believes Everton have lost character under Silva, slating the club’s new signings.
  5. Marco Silva has won 37.9% of his games as Everton manager, compared to Allardyce’s 38.5%.

Following Silva’s arrival, Everton brought in six new players in Richarlison, Yerry Mina, Lucas Digne, Bernard, Kurt Zouma and Andre Gomes – with the latter two on season-long loans. But Cascarino believes none of the new signings have been a hit.

“Everton are really suffering at the moment and it’s down to a lack of character in the squad,” he told the Times.

“They have spent a lot of money in the past couple of seasons and they are exactly where they were in terms of league position but with far less character in the squad than when Sam Allardyce was manager.

“Not one of their signings has been a hit. Richarlison has been OK but Yerry Mina is not the player we saw at the World Cup and Michael Keane has not lived up to his price tag either. Theo Walcott — where has he been? He was a shadow of himself on Saturday as they lost 3-1 to Wolves.

“Their players don’t like heading the ball and they are conceding loads from set pieces. For Raúl Jiménez’s goal, Richarlison has been told to pick up Jiménez, but he totally switches off, allowing the striker a free header. It’s also quite clear they don’t have a centre forward — how they have not invested in one, I do not know.

“It is a very unbalanced squad and a very inadequate squad. Marco Silva has got a problem because their fans are losing faith and the people upstairs may be too.”

Sam Allardyce backs playing style

Cascarino’s comments in favour of Allardyce come just weeks after the man himself defended the way his Everton team played football.

Allardyce has been known for his more defensive style of play, favouring securing the back before working his way up the pitch. And while this has earned him much criticism in the past, the former England manager believed he had to instil a defensive style at Everton, given the players at his disposal.

He said: “In terms of the style of football, the style of football that we played was to the capabilities of the players that were out there on the field and their capabilities proved that the style of football was what they were capable of.

“It wasn’t me saying you have to restrict and play this so-called way, but of course, that comes with my past reputation and everyone jumps on the back of that, which is a falsehood, that’s actually a lie, but that’s what follows.

“So the capabilities of the players were, this is what they’re capable of for now – and I think we got them into a very good position to build and move forward from that.”
