"He'll be ready" - Pochettino upbeat about return of key Spurs forward option

Mauricio Pochettino has said he is optimistic Son Heung-min will feature for Tottenham against Watford on Wednesday night.

Son has been away at the Asian Cup but has now returned to Spurs following South Korea’s quarter-final defeat to Qatar.

Is Son fit enough to face Watford? Five key things to know…

  1. Son only returned from the Asian Cup at the weekend, raising questions over his availability for Wednesday’s match.
  2. The 26-year-old has made 28 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham this season, as well as featuring at the Asian Games and the Asian Cup.
  3. Spurs have desperately missed Son in recent games due to the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli through injury.
  4. The English duo could remain sidelined until March, meaning Son’s return is even more urgent than it ought to be.
  5. But Pochettino has confirmed Son, who has scored 12 goals this term, should be available to play against Watford.

Tottenham have been without Son for the last three matches, which included a 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham followed by back-to-back cup exits at the hands of Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

The Londoners have lacked a goal threat in those defeats, but Pochettino has revealed he is happy with Son’s energy levels ahead of the Watford clash.

“It was a tough period for Sonny, he was so disappointed (after losing against Qatar) and felt empty on the physical side but now he’s happy, he’s recovered his energy and he’ll help the team on Wednesday,” said the Spurs boss, via the club’s official website.

“A few days rest was good for him and for sure, he’ll be ready.

“We are going to decide if he’s going to play from the beginning or maybe on the bench but I’m very optimistic because today he showed very good energy in the training session.”

Will Son solve Tottenham’s striker problem?

Tottenham’s limitations have been highlighted in recent matches, primarily because of the ongoing injury crisis, particularly in attack.

Fernando Llorente has led the line in each of the last three games. The Spaniard scored an own goal against Fulham, found the net at the right end against Chelsea and was generally ineffective at Palace.

Spurs have been without Son, Kane and Alli, the three main sources of goals in the squad.

But Son’s return could change things. Not only has he scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, he has also provided nine assists.

His all-around attacking play and the runs he makes in behind the opposition could help Tottenham to rediscover their mojo by providing the midfield with more options.
