Oldham confirm Paul Scholes as club’s new manager

Oldham Athletic have confirmed the appointment of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes as their permanent manager.

The 44-year-old, who grew up following Oldham, is set to embark on his first managerial role having previously held a coaching role at Manchester United.

Oldham announce Scholes: Five key things to know…

  1. Paul Scholes has been announced as the new manager of League Two side Oldham Athletic.
  2. The former midfielder is set for his first spell in charge of a club having previously been a coach at Manchester United.
  3. A deal for Scholes had been delayed by an EFL decision on his involvement with National League club Salford City.
  4. Scholes owns a 10% stake in the club, with EFL rules preventing a person holding roles with two clubs concurrently without permission.
  5. But the EFL cleared Scholes, allowing him to enter the world of football management.

Oldham have been without a permanent manager since sacking Frankie Bunn in December, with Pete Wild having taken charge on a temporary basis.

Scholes had been linked with the vacant role for some time but had to gain clearance from the English Football League before any deal was made.

EFL rules prevent a person holding roles with two clubs concurrently without express permission from the board. Scholes currently holds a 10% stake in National League side Salford City alongside Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.

But EFL ruled there to be no problem with Scholes’ holding, with shares of 10% or less disregarded as long as it is held “purely for investment purposes”.

And, with Scholes now cleared to take charge of Oldham, the League Two side have announced the 44-year-old as their new manager.

Owner Abdallah Lemsagam told the club’s official website: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football.

“He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.”

Scholes will speak to the press at 2pm this afternoon.

Oldham currently sit 14th in League Two after 30 games and won their most recent game, a 3-0 win over Crawley Town on Saturday.
