Sissoko: Spurs can win the Premier League title this season

Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko believes that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are capable of winning the Premier League title this season.

The Frenchman is adamant that Manchester City and Liverpool being seen as clear favourites is a positive for Tottenham.

Can Spurs go all the way? Five things to know….

  1. Spurs are currently five points off the top with a game in hand over leaders Man City.
  2. Man City thrashed Chelsea on Sunday afternoon to reclaim top spot.
  3. Pep Guardiola’s side lead on goal difference but Liverpool also have a game in hand over the leaders.
  4. Spurs are considered outsiders but beat Leicester 3-1 tto keep pace with the top two.
  5. With Harry Kane and Dele Alli injured, Spurs have become reliant on Christian Eriksen and Heung-min Son in recent weeks.

Tottenham’s win over Leicester was their fourth in a row in the Premier League since their 1-0 defeat to Man Utd in January.

Despite this, many fans still believe that Spurs are already out of this season’s title race even though the north Londoners are just five points behind Man City and Liverpool.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sissoko explained why he doesn’t mind being written off by rival supporters and pundits alike.

He said: “I do think that we can win the league because we have a good team. If people want to talk about Liverpool and Man City, then it’s better for us.

“For me, I prefer that. It means we can just do our jobs. We will fight to the end and anything can happen.

“And, yes, I think we can win the league because we have a good team.”

Sissoko himself has had somewhat of a resurgence in the lilywhite of Spurs. He struggled for form in the early stages of his career in north London and failed to hit the ground running after a series of good displays for former club Newcastle.

However, he has become a much more regular performer this season, playing in 28 games across all competitions to date.

This has not gone unnoticed as he was nominated for the Player of the Month award in November for his efforts.

Are Spurs really in the title race?

There are just 12 games left to play this season, but it seems early to rule Spurs out of the title race altogether.

They may not be favourites, but there is still a chance – albeit a slim one, that they could lift the Premier League for the first time in their history.

At the turn of the year, everybody thought Liverpool had walked away with the league. However, both the Reds and Man City have shown just how quickly momentum can swing in the title race in recent weeks.

Pochettino will be fully aware of how difficult it would be to come out on top this season, but it’s not impossible.

Eriksen and Son have stepped up in the absence of Kane and Alli, with the South Korean scoring three goals in three games since returning from the Asian Games.

Should they keep that up as Kane and Alli return, they’ll have every reason to believe that they can make up the necessary ground.

However, with games against Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City in the pipeline there is little room for error if they are to push their rivals all the way.
