Paul Pogba can lead Man Utd to “great things” – Anthony Martial

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba can help lead the club to “great things” according to teammate Anthony Martial.

Martial recently signed a new deal at the club, extending his stay at Old Trafford until at least 2024.

Is Paul Pogba a leader? Five things you need to know…

  1. Pogba returned to Manchester United in 2016 for a then-world record transfer fee of £89.3 million.
  2. In his two spells at the club, the Frenchman has made 125 appearances for United, scoring 28 goals.
  3. Pogba’s relationship with former United manager Jose Mourinho was poor, with the midfielder openly questioning the club’s tactics.
  4. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Mourinho in December, Pogba’s form has improved, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in the Premier League.
  5. Pogba’s leadership was clear to see last summer as France won the World Cup, with the 25-year-old scoring in the final.

United striker Martial was speaking to reporters about his fellow French teammate, with the forward revealing that he feels Pogba has the necessary attributes to help lead the club to greatness.

Martial said: “We all know what quality Paul possesses – Paul is Paul.

“He is a leader, he talks more in the dressing room than he does on the field to be fair. Technically and with the spoken word, he is a leader in both senses. I hope he can continue to lead us to great things.

“I don’t think we are very far off the top four now so it is just a case of keeping going, winning as many games as we can so we can ensure a place in those Champions League spots at the end of the season.”

“I miss loads in Man Utd training”

In an in-depth chat about his life at Manchester United, Martial discussed how his new manager gets the best out of the team as a whole and the player himself.

United are undefeated since Solskjaer took over the reins at Old Trafford – winning 10 and drawing once –  with Martial’s form also improving. The Frenchman scored in Solskjaer’s first match in charge of the club – a 5-1 victory against Cardiff City – and away against Arsenal in United’s 3-1 win at the Emirates.

Martial added: “He [Solskjaer] is a coach with great values. I think he knows how to get the best out of players and he makes things clear so when we go out onto the field, we all know our jobs and we all know what we’ve got to do.

“He’s given me lots of advice. It’s always positive to get advice from a top player in his own right, but sometimes, when you’re out on the field, it comes down to what comes naturally to you and you do what you’ve always known how to do in terms of finishing.

“We have a laugh among ourselves quite often because I think finishing is something that comes naturally to me. I’ve played since I was a young kid, I’ve always been a footballer and a striker from that early age.

“The thing we laugh about is that I miss quite a few in training, whereas in a match, I may only get one chance and I manage to convert it.”
