Pochettino didn’t want any January signings at Spurs, insists Redknapp

Harry Redknapp believes Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want any January signings after failing to add to his squad for the second transfer window in a row.

Spurs failed to bring in a single player during last month’s transfer window, with the north London club’s last signing now dating back to the £25m arrival of Lucas Moura in January 2018.

Was the January window a failure for Spurs? Four key things to know…

  1. Spurs didn’t bring in a single new signing during the January transfer window.
  2. That is the second window in a row without a new player, with Moura’s arrival in January 2018 the last signing the club made.
  3. Former Spurs boss Redknapp thinks Pochettino is happy with his squad, though, insisting the Argentine already has “fantastic” players.
  4. However, Pochettino has admitted he is “disappointed” at being unable to strengthen his squad.

This has led to widespread criticism from supporters and pundits, with many feeling Spurs won’t be able to maintain a title challenge without adding to their squad.

Former manager Redknapp, however, has backed Pochettino to succeed as he believes the Argentine already has a capable at his disposal.

“He has got a fantastic squad there. They have got fantastic centre-halves and midfielders galore,” former Lilywhites boss Redknapp told BT Sport.

“Pochettino didn’t want any players. I know that for a fact. He is happy with his squad and they have proven him right.”

Tottenham are four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool and face Leicester City at Wembley next Sunday.

Pochettino: I wanted signings

In contrast to Redknapp’s words, Pochettino has expressed his frustration at not being able to add to his squad in January, claiming he did indeed want to make some signings.

“I said in the last press conference not always my idea is the same as the club’s or the chairman’s or the people that are in the club,” Pochettino told the Express ahead of Spurs’ 1-0 narrow win over Newcastle.

“In the moment we take some decisions because sometimes we are forced. I wanted to strengthen the squad but if we cannot strengthen and cannot sign I need to stick and be with the progress of the club.

“I am disappointed because we are in a good position.

“And with more help from some players, we cannot use the excuse we aren’t a real contender. We will dream, we will fight until the end to be as high as we can.

“I am happy to work with my squad, I have a good squad, but always I am open to add more quality. You need to improve, if we can’t add I am not going to be sad.

“I am going to be happy to work with my players and I am so positive that we can win without or with [new] signings.”
