Mauricio Pochettino has eased fears among Tottenham Hotspur fans that he could be set to leave the club for Real Madrid.
The Argentinian has long been linked with moving on from Tottenham and was spotted in a restaurant in London with Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham – two Real Madrid legends.
Is Pochettino set to manage Real Madrid? Five key things to know…
- Mauricio Pochettino is currently being linked with taking charge of 13-time European champions Real Madrid.
- Los Blancos sacked Julen Lopetegui in October and replaced him in Santiago Solari, who is only expected to be a transitionary appointment.
- Pochettino was pictured meeting with Real Madrid legends Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham in the week.
- But the Spurs manager has insisted this was purely a coincidental meeting.
- Pochettino has taken charge of 256 games as Tottenham manager, winning 147.
But, Pochettino – who is also being linked with taking over at Manchester United – has since played down the reports he was with Zidane and Beckham as a precursor for managing Real Madrid.
“Very good, very nice. Very good company,” he told reporters of the meeting.
“I was with Jesus [Perez, his assistant] and another person.
“We were there and met by coincidence, that is all there is to it. Then the story appeared – and how do you stop it? That is the reality.
“I was surprised to see them, “Jesus said to me; ‘look over there’. He came to say hello and we spent two minutes speaking to them and went back home.
“Did we go out through the kitchen. No?”
Real Madrid started the season with Julen Lopetegui in charge, but the former Spain manager was sacked at the end of October due to poor results.
He was replaced by Santiago Solari on a temporary basis initially but, due to Spain’s rules on caretaker managers, the Argentinian was handed the full job until the end of the 2019/20 season.

Pochettino remains coy on his future
Real Madrid are not are not the only team being linked with taking Pochettino away from Tottenham. The 46-year-old is among the favourites to become permanent Manchester United manager in the summer, following José Mourinho’s departure in December.
And Pochettino has previously refused to rule out a move to United, saying: “After five years, there’s a lot of rumours that happen about my position here.
“I cannot answer this question. My business is trying to ensure the best job at this club.
“I’m focussed and focussed tomorrow on delivering my job. What more do I need to say [to fans]?”
