Royston Drenthe regrets telling David Moyes to “f**k off”

Former Everton winger Royston Drenthe has admitted his regret at telling ex-manager, David Moyes, to ‘f**k off’.

The Dutch winger spent the 2011/12 season on loan at Goodison Park from Real Madrid, scoring four goals in 27 games, but his time there was marred by discipline problems.

Drenthe got off to a great start with the Merseyside club, scoring or assisting six goals in his opening 10 Premier League appearances, but the 31-year-old endured constant clashes with Moyes, who took issue with his timekeeping.

Those clashes came to a head when Drenthe turned up late to a team meeting just days before Everton’s FA Cup semi-final meeting with fierce rivals, Liverpool.

“I was waiting outside the room, whereas I probably should have just walked in quietly and taken a seat,” he told FourFourTwo.

“When I went in afterwards, Moyes told me to f**k off. I should have accepted it, but I said, ‘What do you mean, f**k off, bro? You f**k off.’ And then I left for Holland and didn’t come back.

“If I’d adapted more to Moyes I think I’d have reaped the benefits, as initially, I did play a lot under him.”

Everton eventually lost the Wembley showdown 2-1, while Drenthe was told to stay away from the club for the rest of the season.

Van der Meyde: only two Everton players could play football

Drenthe wasn’t the only Dutch winger to have problems under Moyes at Everton, with Andy van der Meyde also making a bizarre claim about the Toffees.

Van der Meyde managed just 20 games for the club between 2005 and 2009, with the former Ajax man suffering from a number of personal problems during his time at Goodison Park.

The 17-time Holland international now runs a show on his YouTube channel where he interviews players in his car and in the latest episode, featuring Dusan Tadic, Van der Meyde pulled no punches, saying just two of his teammates ‘could play football’ at Everton.

“In 2003 I moved to Inter, had two years there and then I moved to Everton for four years,” he said.

“[It was] S***, ah s***.

“There were only two players who could play football, the rest were just running and kicking the ball. It’s unbelievable.”

Host Jake Entwistle is joined by Sam Long and Will Hall for this week’s Squawka Talker to discuss Man City 3-1 Arsenal, the Bundesliga title race, Gonzalo Higuain’s start to life at Chelsea, the best of the rest beyond the ‘Big Six’ and the upcoming El Clasico.
