Marco Silva claims Troy Deeney’s vow to “kick the sh*t” out of Everton’s players this weekend is merely a pre-match “strategy” on the Watford striker’s part.
Silva, who was sacked by Watford last season, referred to previous comments made by Deeney ahead of this term’s reverse fixture, suggesting those comments were a similar tactic.
What did Deeney say about Everton last time? Five key things to know…
- Watford fans were critical of Silva last season as he appeared to flirt with the Everton vacancy before being sacked.
- Silva eventually did join Everton in the summer, taking Brazilian striker Richarlison with him from Vicarage Road.
- Ahead of this season’s reverse fixture at Goodison Park, Deeney was asked about facing Richarlison.
- Deeney said: “I don’t want to talk him up too much because I’m going to have to smash him on Monday!”
- The sides drew 2-2 and Richarlison, who has found the net 10 times in all competitions for Everton, was on the scoresheet.
At a fan forum this week, Deeney was again asked about coming up against Marco Silva when the sides meet at Vicarage Road this weekend, and the striker assured supporters Watford would not hold back on Everton.
“We’d prefer it if you left him (Silva) alone… it’ll only motivate them more. Leave him alone, let us kick the sh*t out of them,” Deeney said, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
But Silva believes Deeney was simply being strategic.
Silva said: “I didn’t hear what Troy said but I know what you are talking about.
“But if you can recall what Troy said two months ago, if you search a little bit for what he said two months ago, maybe you will understand it is a matter of strategy nothing more. I remember what Troy said to me and it will stay with me all the time.”

Are Watford better off without Silva?
Watford made a flying start to 2017/18 campaign under Silva, who had impressed at Hull City the season prior despite suffering relegation.
However, the Portuguese coach was accused of being distracted by a vacancy at Everton, which was eventually filled by Sam Allardyce.
Watford’s form began to dip and Silva was replaced by Javi Gracia, who has done an admirable job since being appointed.
Indeed, going into this weekend’s clash, Watford sit a point and a place above Everton in the Premier League table despite spending far less over the summer.
Silva finds himself under pressure at Everton while Gracia was handed a new long-term contract by the Hornets in November.
