Spurs are still in title race, insists Souness

Graeme Souness has insisted Spurs are still in the title race.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men overcame a resolute Newcastle side to win 1-0 on Saturday, moving them to within four points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Can Spurs win the Premier League? Five key things to know…

  1. Spurs currently sit five points behind leaders Liverpool after the Reds drew 1-1 away to West Ham United Monday night.
  2. Despite being without the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Pochettino’s men have won their last two games with late goals.
  3. Spurs still have away games against both Man City and Liverpool to come in the Premier League.
  4. Graeme Souness insists Spurs must be factored into the title race.
  5. Pep Guardiola has also described Spurs as ‘incredible’, admiring their mental strength.

And although many fans and pundits still believe it is a two-horse race between the Reds and Manchester City, Souness thinks you ‘must factor Tottenham’ into the title argument.

“It’s going to be nip and tuck all the way to the end,” he said on Sky Sports.

“There will be upsets, you’ve got to factor Tottenham into that argument as well.

“It would have been a shock to them to lose that one the other night.”

However, Souness did highlight the problems that Spurs face compared to their title rivals, adding: “It’s quite simple why everyone fancies Liverpool or Manchester City. With all due respect to Spurs, both those teams have more match winners than what Spurs have.

“They have Harry Kane and Dele Alli out right now, which is a major blow to them, but they’re getting by.

“What will make them not win games is when people have an off day. You look at all those City attack-minded players, will they have the same off day? I very much doubt it.

“You think of Liverpool, their front three, would they have an off day at the same time? I very much doubt it.”

Spurs face Leicester at Wembley on Sunday.

Guardiola tips Tottenham to make title race difficult

Following Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, manager Pep Guardiola spoke of his admiration for Tottenham’s ‘strength and fight’, with the Londoners winning their last two league matches thanks to late goals.

“Tottenham are incredible,” said the City manager, who clearly hasn’t ruled Spurs out of the Premier League title race. “The mentality, the strength to fight and fight and win points in the last minute.

“A lot of things are going to happen until the end of the season. Every game will be tough.

“That is the Premier League. You know better to me what it means.”
