Christian Eriksen would jump at the chance to join Barcelona, says Danny Murphy

Danny Murphy believes Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen would ‘jump at the chance’ to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid

Since moving to north London five years ago, Eriksen has made over 200 appearances for Spurs and has firmly established himself as one of their key players as well as one of the best creative midfielders in Europe.

Such is his talent, many pundits and experts have touted the Danish international with a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, with the two Spanish giants chief among those rumoured to be chasing Eriksen.

And former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy, who played at White Hart Lane between 2006 and 2007, believes Eriksen wouldn’t think twice about joining Barca or Real Madrid, should the opportunity arise.

Murphy told Bwin: “I think Eriksen could well be looking to move on from Tottenham to join the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona, I think he is a player that could have his head turned and would jump at the chance to go.

“The problem for him is that I’m not sure he would get the playing time at a top European club. He’s a creative player who has performed very well for the last couple of years, but I don’t see him getting in at Barcelona ahead of the likes of [Philippe] Coutinho.”

Eriksen vs Coutinho

Murphy believes that Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho is far superior to Eriksen and backed the Brazilian to hold down his place as Barcelona’s chief creator even if they make a move for the Spurs man.

And it would appear that Murphy may have a point. During the course of the 2017/18 season, in which Coutinho played for Liverpool and Barcelona, the Brazilian international outperformed Eriksen in pretty much every attacking midfield department.

The 26-year-old created more chances from open play per 90 minutes (3.96) last season than his Spurs counterpart (2.12), while Eriksen’s average of 0.31 goals per 90 minutes was some way off Coutinho’s 1.19.

The two areas where Coutinho really outweighs Eriksen, though, are attempts on goal per 90 minutes and take on success.

The former Inter Milan man averaged 7.2 attempts per 90 minutes, while also successfully taking on an opponent 6.73 times per 90 minutes – Eriksen only managed 2.98 and 0.89 per 90 minutes respectively in these departments.
