Copa Libertadores Superclasico between River Plate and Boca Juniors postponed again

The Copa Libertadores final second-leg between Boca Juniors and River Plate has once again been postponed.

Sunday’s rescheduled Superclasico was due to take place at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti (El Monumental) stadium, but will now be deferred after a request sent from Boca Juniors to have the match delayed was granted.

South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL sanctioned the proposed delay following an attack aimed at the Boca Juniors’ team coach on Saturday by River Plate fans.

The match was originally scheduled for Saturday, but following the attacks, which saw a number of Boca players injured including club captain Pablo Perez, CONMEBOL have agreed to extend the postponement.

Boca argued that 24 hours – the original delay – was not enough time for their players to recover following the crowd trouble and unrest, and at present no announcement has been made about a new fixture date.

CONMEBOL did, however, state that governing body officials and the club presidents of both clubs will meet on Tuesday to discuss arrangements for a new time and date.

CONMEBOL announced on their official Twitter page: “The President and the Council of CONMEBOL decided on Sunday morning the postponement of the second leg of the final of CONMEBOL Libertadores 2018 with the aim of preserving sport equality.

“The new date of the final will be analyzed and decided in a meeting in Asunción on Tuesday 27 at 10 in the morning with the presidents of the finalist clubs, Boca Juniors and River Plate.”

Boca players suffered a number of injuries, including cuts from broken glass, after the attack, and many were reportedly impacted by tear gas used by police just outside the bus.

Former Manchester City and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez, was also reportedly affected by the tear gas and suffered from dizziness as a result.

Fan were already gathering in River Plater’s El Monumental stadium when the announcement was made three hours before kick-off.
